There's a Hooters in Nottingham?!?

It's already gone up in my estimation

There is a good travel inn opposite Nottingham Trent Uni, which is a 5 minute walk into town.
There are proper rough areas in Nottingham (I nearly got knifed and had a hooker in my car - not at my request might I add - all in one evening once, but not near the centre), but it's great for a good night out.
The Social or Cookie Club are fairly good nights out if you don't like sh!t r'n'b

Having lived in Leicester myself I can assure you it is comparable to a bad day in Bosnia....

I guess it depends what area you are talking about. I went to uni in Nottingham in the late 90s and lived for two years in The Meadows, which is notoriously one of the worst parts - but I never encountered any trouble at all.

I personally loved Nottingham and would still probably live there if there were job opportunities.
Second all of that. It's a great place if you know where to go. As a general rule, if you don't stray too far from the main city centre and behave yourself (within reason) there won't be any problems.

Rock City is meant to be good in Nottingham as well.
