Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

Taken a bit of time to digest and work through the disappointment yesterday before posting. Apologies in advance as I'll probably reiterate a lot of what has already been said, but a few points:

I'm proud of the players and staff. They clearly gave their all for the badge and it's refreshing to see players that graft rather than many of the wage-stealers we've seen over the years.

If it was a boxing match, I think Oldham shaded it on points. They're a proper club with a great fanbase and I wish them all the best for next year.

When we went 1-0 up, I thought maybe we'd peaked too early, but we tried to stay on the front-foot even though it wasn't always successful. Conceding right after the kickoff could've completely derailed us, but I thought we looked pretty solid in the second half.

At 2-1, we had all the momentum and it was pretty much the only part of the game where we had Oldham properly rattled. I genuinely thought that the next goal would be 3-1 to us and good night Vienna, but we imploded in the space of two mad minutes.

Whilst Fondop didn't have a great game, he's the perfect striker at this level. When under pressure, they could hit diagonals to him which he'd invariably hold up and win to bring others into play.

The referee was atrocious. Every 50/50 decision went their way though, as others have said, I can't blame the defeat on him.

I can't help that think this was a huge missed opportunity. Yes I'm proud of the players and I think Kev broadly made the right decisions, but both the 2nd and 3rd goals were preventable. Next year isn't going to get any easier, so I think we have to show our intentions this summer and have a proper tilt at the title. I know COSU will manage the finances prudently, and I'm totally on board with that. I just hope Kev and the boys have a competitive budget.

Man of the match - Harry Taylor. I haven't seen that much of a committed performance for many years and he certainly didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Honourable mentions to Noor, KAF and Ralph who were excellent as well. I also thought Oli Coker did a great job off the bench and was disappointed not to see him start. On a big pitch, with his range of passing and use of space, I thought his skillset would've been ideal.

Finally, great to see many old faces and Southend United fans in one place. I may not get to as many games as I used to, but it's refreshing to know that the club can still ruin my weekend/week/month/life :Winking:

Dunno, but my friends were watching on DAZN, and it seems the very biased Oldham commentators were saying no, he dived, but the footage clearly showed contact! they said it looked more a penalty than theirs, I cant comment, because the other end of the pitch was a long way away!
Put it this way, if KAF had gone down immediately after the contact then the ref may well have given a spot kick. There was definite contact. The fact he tried to stay on his feet went against him, as it always tends to do.

I wonder if, once the dust has settled - if Kev will regret a couple of decisions.

Firstly, the big decision was to start Miley over Coker. He went with Miley's experience and defensive qualities but given he's not started since January, I think it put a lot of pressure on him. He's been really effective as a closer and I would have loved to have him in the latter stages/extra time. His early yellow also nullified what he was able to offer, and he was blowing after 60 mins.

Secondly - Hopper over Bonne. Again, I think we missed Hopper in the second half of the match, when we need to defend at times and someone to take the pressure off the back line. Automatically he dropped back in the first 20 mins and left Kendall a bit isolated, which put us under pressure in the first half. Bonne has more pace and would have worried their defenders a bit more. We brought him on when we weren't exactly chasing the game, but just needed fresh legs up front as Hopper was exhausted.

TBF, I think our bench made a positive impact, which I expected it would have. Just a shame we didn't have the quality and experience of Cav and Hopper to bring off the bench to help us close the game out, in extra time especially.

Wonderful spectacle bar the result and a fantastic day out at wembley. felt proud to be there and of everyone involved in the team and the southend fans looked and sounded brilliant from where I was around the middle of the pitch.
Things that concerned me and others pre match were Cavs tendency to pick up early cards through tackles and whether Gus would be able to keep composed early on. Unfortunately both went as thought might happen with an unnecessary early card for cav and gus looking over hyper early on spending energy on everything apart from his own game. This left both of them restricted later in the game. Cav through cautiosness and fitness and gus through physical and mental exhaustion. Both avoidable with more game management and experience.
Maybe again through lack of experience\nous\niaivity on the pitch, I reckon had it been Oldham go 2-1 up with 10 mins left, a player or the keeper goes down on the signal from the bench and in the break the team is restructured and all behind the ball bar maybe walker up front and stick bonne on fondup like glue.
Having said that, it's impossible to stop a fluke goal and I thought Oldham played to their strengths very well at all stages of the game.
Heroic efforts from our team who gave their all and I believe the two previous games took a lot out of them. Every one of them should be proud of themselves for getting to wembley.
Hopefully the experience will act as a motivator for the players for next season because it was a wonderful experience albeit a sad ending.
Will kev and co have it in them to go again in the NL if a bigger offer comes in while their stock is high? Parillon and KAF certainly put themselves in the shop window. It will be interesting to see if any offers come in for gus after his brilliant goals this season, but I'm not sure his defending will attract many.
I think we will be looking for only 3 or 4 additions but lots of unknowns to be resolved. Bonnes contract. Goodliffes future. Collins fitness. Offers received by other clubs.

He likes playing hopper so he can help out the defence.

Which is fair to a point i guess, but Id rather have a striker who scores goals and a defence that didnt need that help.

What a day bar the ending, I did think we were going to do it, as we seemed to deal with everything that was thrown at us this season.
A game too far me thinks, for me only Harry Taylor brought his A game to the party, we just looked knackered.
Couple of points, I think Cav should have been replaced a lot sooner as he was so scared to tackle, and the glaring pull up mid way through the second half, made Kev take him off.
And why wasn't GW brought on, as tired legs were showing all over the place, lost count how many subs Oldham used.
So near and yet so far, please let us get out of this league next time....UTB
Oldham used 6 subs, including subbing a sub who'd only been on the pitch around 40mins.

We used 5

Proud, but deflated. On the balance of play and clear-cut chances, Oldham were the better side, but at 2-1 in extra time, we had them on the ropes mentally and physically - they were all but done. All we needed to do was stay composed and use some common sense (i.e. keep hold of the ball in benign areas of the pitch), but Goodliffe had a mare with the goals, and that third was inexcusable really.
Feel we will massively rue this free hit to get out of this hellish division as it will be even harder next season what with the likes of Carlisle, York and FGR with the funds to outbid us on any half decent players.

That was MM taking off an attacking midfielder / winger - brought on to try and help win the game (and it was his pass that Norwood scored from - though there was a lot to do once he got it) and he was swapped for the defensive ankle biter / high press of Rossiter.

Tactically the right thing to do from our perspective.

I want to watch the game back to see all the decisions that did and didnt go for each team - but DAZN still have the match behind their paywall.

Not been many ratings yet so I'll give it a stab:

Hayes 7 - Not his biggest fan but didn't think he did anything wrong today, came out for crosses well and wasn't much he could have done for any of the goals.

GSM 7 - Was awful in the second half of extra time (I think he was shattered and should have been subbed off) but that shouldn't detract from the fact he created 2 goals, if that's a "bad" performance for him it shows how high his standard is.

Goodliffe 4 - Largely solid but ultimately he's lost us the match with a couple of awful errors.

Taylor 6 - Decent performance but there were a couple of nervy moments, how he got away with that slide tackle in the box first half I don't know.

Ralph 7 - Pick of the CBs and (whilst I could be wrong) I don't think he can be blamed for any of the goals

Bridge 6 - If he stays for next season he needs to work on what to do after he beats his man, 9 times out of 10 he'll spend half a minute getting past someone only to then put in a cross that's easy to deal with

Miley 4 - He hasn't started many matches recently and it showed, took too much time on the ball and thanks to his early booking (which could have easily been a red) he was reluctant to make big challenges. We looked much more in control once he was subbed. Hopefully with a proper preseason he can get back to the level we know he can be.

Husin 7 - Much improved on the other playoff matches, rarely gave possession away and generally did a good job of bringing others into play.

KAF 8 - MotM, never stopped making runs in the channels and was our main threat all match, we need to make sure he stays at all costs.

Hopper 6 - typical Hopper performance where he never looks like scoring but holds the ball up well enough for others like KAF to get up the pitch, wasn't helped by an unsympathetic ref letting him be manhandled. We need someone like him in the squad so I hope he stays.

Kendall 6 - Good early run to force an own goal but was quiet by his standards after that. Still though, he'll be a big player for us next season.

Subs

Bonne 5 - won a lot of headers but his decisions when the ball was at his feet were awful, it's the story of his season. I really like Bonne but unless the coaches think a preseason can improve his play when the ball's at his feet it's probably time to let him go.

Parillion 8 - The most exciting player we've had in years when he has the ball. I hope the fact he's been a sub most of the season means he goes under the radar of league clubs because he could easily be in a higher league with his potential.

Coker 6 - didn't do much wrong but didn't do much to impress either.

Walker 6 - Groaned when I saw him come on but I was impressed by his work rate today, a couple of moves in ET happened because of him, it's just a shame the one real chance he had got hit straight at the keeper.

Well I am still feeling lower than a snakes belly this morning. Can’t shake the thought that we will never be in a better situation than 1 up with 10 minutes to go in the playoff Final. We could be so much better next season finish with 96 points in 2nd place. Then have an off day in home semi against an inform team that finishes strong in 5th, like York this season.
As for the game well Josh Walker had it in his hands for 3-1. Not been mentioned much but he did brilliantly to beat the defenders with pace and strength but could not finish. The shot needed driving hard and low under or to the side of the keeper. Instead he dollied it up and made it easy for keeper to put an arm up and stop. Then we have to say that Oldham’s sub strikers did what ours couldn’t, good finish by Norwood and fortuitous from Harratt. Bonne and Walker could not repeat and we were done. Yes I thought the ref was Oldham biased and if that is how the ref’s operate we need more physicality next season. As for the initial 90 minutes we all saw it and I am not going to dissect it too much. some played better than others on the day but this was the squad that got us this far. Kev must have been up all night deliberating about his starting eleven and was good to have options.

Hayes 6
Taylor 8 MOTM
Goodliffe 5.5
Ralph 7
GSM 6.5
KAF 7.5
Miley 6.5
Husin 7.5
Bridge 5.5
Hopper 7
Kendall 6.5

LCP 7.5
Bonne 6
Coker 7
Walker 7
Gubbins 5

Harry Taylor my MOTM and what great service we have had over his four seasons with us thus far.
Now we have the prospect of long travels to Carlisle, Morecambe & Truro to add to Gateshead, Hartlepool & York 😩. Was starting to think about tasty local games against Col U, Cambridge & Crawley and as already said think in time we will rue this massive missed opportunity. I know people have been saying with a full pre-season etc. But we are already 3 weeks behind others and have this huge disappointment to get over. Feel sorry for Kev and staff they will not have a long or enjoyable summer break. We will not win the league with this group of players, concede too many and not score enough. But I will be back first weekend in August with renewed hope no doubt. UTB

Oldham were allowed to purchase up to 30 tickets per person in the general sale, which was a big fail on our part limiting to 4 (briefly 10) if I'm honest. It meant groups of friends/family couldn't sit together. IF we ever get to a cup final again, I'd like to be able to sit with more than 3 other friends/family. Not sure why Oldham also had the ability to pick a seat and we didn't.

All things the club can learn from.
Agreed We 100% need to learn from this
.first half I was row 12 block 121- they were so much louder than us. Very few around us were singing- which is fair enough I suppose.

Second half we were in 112 row 25- the designates signing section.( we always sing, especially when losing)
It was flat , mates said it was flat first half as well, people only singing when we did something good. I expected /hoped for 100% singing all game
We could hear the drum and we could hear plenty singing above us in I guess 111/110 but the drum was muffled from where we were.

I don’t know what the answer is but i felt we needed ‘TBV’ central behind the goal, maybe that would have got people singing more

Maybe next time a section that only W block can buy tickets for (W is practically 100% season ticket so possible) and have the general singing sections all around ‘W’?

In summary there must be something we can do better for when we are here next.

Ps totally and utterly gutted, we were that close and if Walker had scored for 3-1 despite my earlier points the roof would have came off.

Ps- Walker made that all himself winning the ball from practically the half way line so I am happy to catch him some slack on not scoring.

Can't believe that when I was clapping our players off of the pitch someone pinched my match programme from under my seat. Talk about 2 upsets in one day. I hope our fan whoever pinched it goes to sleep tonight and never wakes up. My mate got 2 for his sons so he gave me one of his. Your a top bloke Lee. Who steels from there own? COYBs
You can have my programme, and I'll write something witty to cheer you up. Ask mods to let me know where to send it.

Support from everyone yesterday was quite incredible, great to see so many old faces, lots of new Shrimpers who'll have the taste of how special the club can be.

Keep the faith, I'll send the programme when I know where to send it.

Really great day out other than the result. We gave it a great go and really can’t complain about the effort and progress the team has made since turn off the year. Game could have gone either way and it was always likely to be thus. Gutted. But at the same time in awe of our support and excited for next season.

Need to kick on now. Playoffs mean that a lot likely will happen over the next 4-5 weeks before, unbelievably, we are back for pre-season training…

We had such a good day yesterday, proper grin but on a more serious note, if we intend to get out of this **** fest league there’s no point doing things half measures. We have to go for the top spot COYB.

Finally, I’d just like to say how impressive the **** houses at Wembley were 🤜. Not one mushroom of worth in site.
