Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

WAS not thee today but watch it on DAZN at times we was a match for oldham But in the end our lack of cointrol lost us the match In the summer we need a clear out .Iam afraid Walker just is not good enough We will need a new center half As the col u center back i doubt will return .We also may lose one or two to higher clubs Only time will tell .

This one really hurts. Probably too early to analyse what happened without being unreasonable, so forgive the analysis below.

Hayes cannot be first choice keeper next season. Were the goals his fault? No, but he gets nowhere near anything and can’t kick.

GSM was not at the races at all today… genuinely questioned if the whack to his head last week had some effect, as I’ve never seen him over hit and miss pass as much as today.

Goodliffe was unfortunate with the goal, but also had a golden chance near the end that he air kicked.

We’re 4-5 players away from being able to challenge consistently next season, and I’m not hopeful that we’ll be able to do that given so many are still contracted.

Now in what looks like multiple hours of queuing to get away… 15 minutes away from not being in this league anymore - absolutely gutted.
Spot on about Hayes, rooted to the spot for the foul that gave them their penalty, can't kick and generally a poor keeper, was at fault for a goal in semi's as well.

Goodliffe and Hayes conspired to lose us that game, sadly. I appreciate their hard work and effort this season but we need to move on from the pair of them.

The mess at Liv St has topped off a pretty horrible day
Sorry you feel that way. Goodliffe's attempt to clear that speculative cross certainly gave Hayes no chance and for once his headers were weak and poorly directed. But come on, we were at Wembley. We came close to winning. We scared Oldham who had blasted both Halifax and York and whose fans thought they would thrash us. Despite losing so cruelly it's been a day to remember.

Let's look forward to going one better next season JCB.

Gutted that we got so close to then get it snatched away from us in 2 disastrous minutes - as people have mentions Oldham were the better side but only in the final third as I thought we held our own in midfield and Ralph and Taylor defended superbly .

No complaints it just hurts when u are that close to pulling off a miracle

MOTM - Ralph . I thought he was excellent today , crowd was good but the atmosphere didn’t sound as loud as when Oldham were in full voice

Hello

Oldham fan in peace.

Have enjoyed posting and reading this forum over the last few weeks.

A few points.

Your fan base is amazing. I know we always have good support, but today to see 2 huge, noisy and passionate supporters packing a Wembley made it a real occasion.

As for the game…..I have never been as mentally exhausted after a game of football ever. My heart rate was at 136 bpm in the last 5 minutes.

Also before the game I said that it was close to call, but felt that if we played to our best we would win. I think we didn’t play as well as I’d hoped - but that was more due to how you played I think, and you nullified the threat that we’d used so well in the previous 2 games.

The first goal knocked us - and I didn’t feel in the game for next 20 minutes, but then we didn’t play get more control and as stated we missed some good opportunities (and how Fondop missed that one near the end of the half I will never know).

Second half we got the penalty and I thought that would spur us on, but from our POV it felt like you were the better team for the rest of the half - even though we did have two good opportunities to score.

The early goal in ET seemed to floor us…team looked out of gas, our supporters were deflated and flat. Couldn’t see how we would get back in the game….and then 2 minutes of football that was out of the blue changed everything.

We are delighted to have won it, but I cannot hand on heart say it was well deserved. It was a close, tight game, and probably a draw and the penalty lottery would have been a fair outcome.

However after 34 years of waiting, I will be selfish and say I don’t care, and the memory of today - sharing it with my wife, my 7yo son and 80 year old Dad will be cherished forever.

The posts on here have been heartfelt, honest, and generous to Oldham - and I genuinely wish you success next season. There is not another team in the NL that deserves promotion more next season.

I will leave you to your angst and disappointment.

Yours in sport

I have been supporting Southend for 45 years and haven't felt this gutted. Very proud of the team despite the loss.

I hope that the players can somehow take some positives from this play off run.

This is such a difficult league to get out of and if I'm honest I don't think the squad is strong enough to challenge for the title. With so many players under contract and with debts to pay I will be surprised if we can add enough quality players to make us a serious challenger to win the league - I hope I'm wrong!

All the best mate. Said congrats to a group in TGI Fridays and on the train. Was painful way to lose and hurts like hell but pleased for Oldham.

It's a funny old game - in the league we've scored 59 and conceded 48 over the 46 games. Low scoring and tight at the back. In the play-offs - we've scored and conceded 8 in just 3 games! Complete opposite

And today all goals scored at the same end?

Enjoy it. I don’t think many will argue that Oldham, overall, deserved to win.
