Richie Foran - relegation release clause?

Well I dont really see all the negativity with him here, ok we thought he might be the one that helps us stay in the championship, but he might do as good in league one....

No, before Paul Byrne got stuck into the drink & pies he had real skill and on his day could have been a classy footballer.

Foran on the other hand is a clogger who has landed lucky with an agent who's raised his profile higher than his talent!

yea, i agree, but at times foran looks like with a bit of hard work he could be a bit special, yet its perhaps his explot's out and about that stop this becoming a reality?

I said when we were linked with him, somtime before we actually bought him, it would be a huge mistake as he was shown the door by Carlisle when they were struggling at the bottom of League Two, a couple of years before they finally succumbed to the drop to the Conference.

My question at the time was if he wasnt good enough for them, how on earth could he now be good enough for a team trying to avoid relegation from the second tier of English football?

The bottom line is he isnt. Yes, he started off OK, but from what I have seen, he is a complete waste of space. His effort is almost zero, he shows no enthusiasm for anything and the two misses against Luton were remarkable!

If he was trying his hardest, but just wasnt good enough, then fair play to the bloke, you cant criticise him for that. The only person at fault would be the management for spending all that money on someone who blaantly doesnt have the talent.

The problem is, not only does he not seem to have the quality, but he doesnt have any desire in him. He just strolls around like he doesnt have a care in the world, and I cannot stand that attitude from players.

It was a huge slice of money wasted by us if the figures being banded about are anywhere near accurate, and I only hope and pray that this so called relegation clause works in our favour and we can get rid and move on.

If we cant, I fear we will be stuck with him for the remained of his contract before he walks away on a free, meanwhile draining our resources and offering nothing in return.

I am led to believe (a colleague's Dad knows a lot of the Motherwell players really well) the first thing he did after signing was to go out and buy a new BMW X5!

Foran's first few games were amazing, and his goal against Burnley crucial!! Admitted sinse the ball hit the back of the net that day, he has been ****ing useless, but I am willing to stay off his back and give him a chance to prove that he and Hooper can be the most prolific partnership in league 1 next season

Agreed, first couple of outings I thought he was a great prospect. Since then he's been getting worse. That aside, thought that on Saturday he was at least trying.

He'll be here next year.

well at first he was fighting for his place in the squad and i thought he was brilliant, rarely saw him lose a header, then he became a regular and started slacking.

People did with Paynter (not you...)

Quite right, they did - and to this day, I have never worked out why!

In terms of ability, he seems to have more than Foran and Harrold put together and has tonnes of energy and a high work rate, I am still bemused as to why the Southend faithful didnt take to him.

I hope he comes back and starts firing next season, but I have this horrible feeling we may have seen the last of him, which would be a real shame, as the guy did not deserve the treatment he received.

definitely... the crowd were horrific to him and i have never felt so ashamed and embarrassed to be a blue... he is no freddy, but is a decent player who will give 100% and we'll need that next year

I was'nt the one who jeer him agasint the like of Cardiff at home and I feel ashamed and embarrassed about this these days - I really hope he get another chance to win us over and hopefully he have a good pre-season and be part of a team that win promotion in 2007/08 season.

Completely disagree with that, Foran has shown far more promise in his games for Southend than Paynter did.

Paynter looked slow, unable to hold the ball up and the control of a drunk Stephen Hawkins.

Whilst I Foran didnt live up to early promise and Paynter has done reasonably well at Bradford Id still say Foran has done more in a blues shirt than Paynter.

The only game I saw Paynter look at all reasonable was against Cardiff when he started to seem to win headers etc, but then he was injured straight after.

Both players have a lot to prove next season.

The I guess we will have to disagree with each other then JM.

Foran, apart from Stoke away from home, has shown barely almost nothing to me in terms of ability, even less, any desire to work hard and try and help us get out of the mess we were in.

Paynter was given absolutely zero chance by our fans for some reason - the treatment of him was embarrassing, and based on what he allegedly did wrong, then Foran should have received much worse - Not that I am in anyway saying that is the right thing to do, far from it, just using that analogy to get my point across.

His performance against Cardiff was very good, he was the only one who looked any kind of goal threat in that match, hitting the bar with a brilliant looping header and then his performance away at Leeds in the Carling Cup before he got injured was absolutely superb.

On top of that, we have seen Paynter play extremely well against us for Port Vale last season, so we know he has pedigree - As I said previously, i had never been impressed with Foran on each occassion I had seen him previously play against us.

Now dont get me wrong, I am not trying to make this into a one player persecution exercise, not at all, I want anyone who pulls on a Southend shirt to do well and if he is here next season, I will be desperate for him to prove me and the other doubters wrong, but from what I have seen so far, he is by far and away a much worse buy than Paynter and nothing anyone says will convince me otherwise.

Am I the only person who thinks that he's going to come good?

He's only been here for a few months, signs for a struggling side in a league in a different country and relocates 600-odd miles, cost us a fraction of what most teams in this league are paying for a forward, gets straight away thrown in at the deep end but because he's not scored a hatful of goals for us he's ****e.

Judge him halfway through next season when he's settled in the area. I'm sure like most of our players he's got a relegation release clause, but I bet it's for more than the 150k we signed him for.

I can think of many more pertinant reasons why we got relegated than signing Foran...

yep.. i'm feeling that with a good pre-season and some hard work on his fitness, foran will be a decent player.. just needs to find his position because at the moment he doesn't look like a complete winger or striker

Could it be that the crowd were just disapointed that Paynter wasn't another Freddy but more in the Bradbury mold and obviously never going to be our saviour and get us twenty goals a season. Freddy has set the bar high for the rest to follow and I'm afraid until the Eastwood ghost has well and truly left the Hall.... nobody is going to be able to step into his shoes.

Totally agree.

The thing people forget about Freddy is, is when he joined us he was a non-league player who because a good lge 2 player who we signed for a lge 2 transfer fee. He got better and last season was a good lge 1 player. This season, he took another step up and is now a good Champ player. But I'm 100% convinced if we's signed the Freddy of two seasons ago last Christmas, everybody would be saying he's a complete waste of space.

Feel sorry for Paynter. Us fans never gave him the chance to settle in.
