Saints name Hanlon boss

Relegated Nationwide Conference side St Albans City have announced the appointment of Richie Hanlon as their new manager.

The 29-year-old is well-travelled having plied his trade with Southend, Peterborough, Rushden & Diamonds and Cambridge United more recently.

Hanlon's playing career was cut short after sustaining a cruciate ligament injury but has remains enthusiastic and pro-active, leading to his appointment by Saints chairman John Gibson.

"It is these qualities combined with his strength of character which we believe will set the club on course for a quick return to Conference football," Gibson told the club's official website.

"I have been impressed by comments about his management potential from football colleagues, and believe he will prove to be the right person for our Club at this time."

Christ, I feel old. I remember him signing for us as a teenager.

Good luck to him, it never worked out at the Hall for him but how often do you hear of players who've had shortened careers take to management successfully as they've got that extra-special drive to prove something!

I recall seeing Hanlon on a documentary about the Chelsea youth setup , he was the youth team captain and was giving it the biggun about how he was going to get a pro contract and was on his way to the top .
A couple of months later they let him go, he came to Southend but, as with a large number of kids released by top clubs, he didn't last and drifted down the leagues swapping between conference and Div3/League 2 until his injury.
