Round 1 Heat 3

Who is the Best Song Writer

  • Total voters
    30
  • Poll closed .
I agree with you on this.

What is also pointless is showing videos.....You need lyrics.

Are people judging on a melody? No, they are judging on lyrics. To get more votes, I think that lyrics should be posted.

Are we? It's songwriter, not lyricist - two distinct skills.

Really is a tough one this, my vote is still up for grabs!

Then surely this should settle it:

To be fair to the Gibbs I'd say that the tune to Staying Alive is a lot more impressive than 'you can tell by the way I do my walk, I'm a woman's man', but you can judge a song on the melody or the lyrics which ever is most important to you.

Supernaut has already posted a selection of Win Butler lyrics:

Neighbourhood #2 (Laika);
Our older brother bit by a Vampire
For a year we caught his tears in a cup
And now we're gonna make him drink it
Come on Alex don't die or dry up!

The Suburbs;
So can you understand, why I want a daughter while I'm still young
I wanna hold her hand and show her some beauty before this damage is done
But if it's too much to ask, if it's too much to ask, then send me a son

Intervention;
Working for the church while your family dies
You take what they give you and you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan "We'll go at it alone"

Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels);
Then, we tried to name our babies,
But we forgot all the names that, the names we used to know
But sometimes, we remember our bedrooms and our parent's bedrooms
And the bedrooms of our friends
Then we think of our parents - well, whatever happened to them?!

They are fab lyrics but I've never heard the songs.

It's a very grey area I suppose. Does a songwriter write the song/words or the tune or both.

Some songs stick in your head because of the tune or the riff that runs thru the song. Some songs because the words are just amazing.

Which one of these two is called songwriting tho?

They are fab lyrics but I've never heard the songs.
Requests, of course we do requests. This my friend is going to be a beautiful new beginning, I pray for the day I forget what the Arcade Fire sound like and can fall in love all over again!

Pleased to see this is turning into a proper battle.

I am not so sure though that Win Butler is responsible for selling some 220 million records on the back of his song writing.

Give the boy time, maybe we should hold this heat over for 30 years to be able to truly gauge it. I'm confident the 'On the buses' footage will lead to a late surge in votes!

Never even heard of Win Butler or Arcade Fire, therefore the Gibbs take my vote easily.

More Bee Gees magic:

And more brilliance, as recorded by others for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack:

So many memories there Rusty.."Spirits having flown" is a great album and the track you selected is just the best...:clap:

So this is 'who sold the most records' then? I thought it was about who's the best songwriter. Sales doesn't mean **** - Big Star and Nick Drake sold **** all records in their lifetime, doesn't stop them from being far superior writers to many acts who sold millions.

Wow - great idea from whoever though of setting the track to those images. It really brings home the power and majesty of Butler's words. Try watching that and then telling me that anything any of the Bee Gees has ever written is superior - I won't believe you.

Ahem, if you check my post I did say on the back of their song writing, admittedly using the other opponent as the example..Sales don't lie to the general public.

But good songwriting alone doesn't sell records - the Bee Gees have always been on a major label and so their records have always had the best possible promotion. And perhaps their most famous work is still Saturday Night Fever - would that have sold as well had the film not been so popular? And if we're saying that selling loads means that something is good, then we're getting into very dodgy ground indeed.

As much as I rate Arcade Fire, its early days for them, the Gibbs have been there and done it all. I am indeed a woman in love with quality 70s gems.

I thought that was what this comp was all about..surely record sales that the public buy must be taken into account?

Digressing here but the Iphone seems pretty good to those that have brought it.Sales seem to tell that.The guys who wrote the programming for that are probably responsible for its success.

Then let's just give the gong to Michael Jackson and Rod Temperton now and forget the rest of the battle!

That's consumer products, not art - totally different. A product will generally not sell if it's crap (unless it's cheap and disposable), but plenty of crap records/books/films have been consumed by millions of people - they don't become good because they've sold millions.
