Had a thought on the back of the Julian Bennet situation, where he was injured by a deliberate foul and is now out for 6 months. terrible luck on the lad, and also terrible luck on Southend, given the financial constraints we're under.

I used to think that it would be interesting if, when a player is injured by a deliberate foul, the player that commits the foul should be suspended for the duration of the time the injured player is out. But that would be too open to abuse. Imagine Palace's Joel Ward being 'out for the season' after Van Persie went shoulder to shoulder?!

So I thought of an alternative. How about the club of the player who committed the foul covers the wages of the injured player until he's fit enough to play again?

Thoughts people?

How could you police it? It'd end up in court as the offending player will dispute that the foul was deliberate.

Don't the PFA or the club take out insurance for players who are injured?

Not sure that would work. What about cynical fouls but no harm is meant?

Isn't there a rule already in place that punishes dangerous tackles with more than a 3 match ban?

Imagine this, we get a game against Man City in the FA Cup 3rd round and the score is 1-1 and in the last minute Aguero is through on goal but before he can enter the penalty area he has his heels clipped by one of our players which causes him to stumble. It wasn't a forceful challenge, but Aguero trips and falls awkwardly onto his shoulder and fractures his collarbone.

Under your rules, Southend will be forced to pay Man City Aguero's wages until he is fit again. Around 6-8 weeks I guess, would mean a total of around £1.2m in wages (if Aguero is on £150k a week) which is about 10 months salary of our whole team.

Keep it as it is. If a player goes in to deliberately hurt someone then they deserve a long suspension, remember Keane on Haaland? He got an additional 5 match ban and a £150k fine.
