Started watching Sandy from the Man City game maybe 1952, always a guy no one mentioned but never let Southend down. Type of player who was 7 out of ten every time he put the shirt on. RIP young Sandy, you will always be young.

I must admit, I am confused, because I thought Alan Moody was our highest appearances, however, what I've read today seems to suggest it was Sandy.

Am i making this up or did Sandy make an appearance for Southend around 30 years ago in a testimonial match at Roots Hall , maybe for Alan Moody ? i know i was very young but was aware that the elderly gentleman playing right back was a record breaker and a real southend legend..

I think there was a separate 'legends' match it could well have been at Alan Moody's testimonial in May 1983.
Yes Sandy played in the legend's match prior to Alan Moody Testimonial match in May 1983. The line-ups were as follows 60's Peter Goy; Sandy Anderson; Bobby King; Ken Jones; Mike Beesley; Micky Wright;
Alex Stenhouse; Malcolm Slater; Bud Houghton; Bobby Kellard & John McKinven. 70's team:- Malcolm Webster; Frankie Banks; Andy Ford: Peter Hunt; John Walker; Graham Franklin; Dave Cunningham; Billy Best; Jeff Hull; Peter Taylor & Bernie Lewis. I also believe Sandy played in the legends team in April 1970 this was prior to Dave Robinson's testimonial match against Aston Villa.

Sad to hear of Sandy's passing.
He was part of a defence that Southend teams were built on in the late 50s and early 60s.
Harry Threadgold in goal, Arthur Williamson & Sandy Anderson as full backs, supporting another legend and IMHO the best centre half in Southend history, Peter Watson.

Great times and thanks for reminding me Nobbler. That's some list of legends.

Alan Moody is highest overall, but Sandy Anderson played more League games than Alan Moody.

Sandy Anderson 452 League & 31 Cup matches scored 8 League goals, 1950 to 1962.
Alan Moody 444 (+2 subs) League & 60 Cup Matches scored 41 League Goals and 3 Cup Goals, 1972 to 1984.

Met him once in a " professional " matter when he was unwell, he had SUFC memorabilia all around his flat, and despite being considerably unwell, was happy to talk to me about his love for Southend FC and his career with us.
He was one of the nicest people you could meet, and his passion for the game was evident, I could of spoke to him for hours.

RIP Sandy.

NO!and N
0 again! The Man. City FA Cup match(one of my first visits to the Hall )was January 1956 and the left-back was Denis Howe,Sandy Anderson only made 9 appearances -all league-that season!

Evoked so many memories for me too. The Threadgold, Williamson, Anderson trio seemed everlasting , unshakeable and utterly reliable. Great days.

Left back when I started watching and certainly a fantastic player for a youngster to aspire to.

RIP Sandy - you helped me become an SUFC supporting lunatic and I still love you.

Sad news. Still able to recite the team I began supporting back in the fifties..........always begin with Harry Threadgold, Sandy Anderson and Arthur Williamson. There was more stability during those times, players moved far less, loyalty was the norm.
