So IDS thinks he can live on £53/week?

I couldn't find the link yesterday.Do pay attention.:dim:

I am paying attention Barna which is why I wondered why you posted "done" at 11.34 yesterday although you know claim you couldn't find the link yesterday. Are you Dave Bennett in disguise?

Ever heard of the past pefect tense? I hadn't been able to find the link when I'd tried before 11.33.:facepalm:

I have heard of someone talking bollocks who along with 360,000 other mugs signed a petition about a bloke who gets three times more than the money he claims he does.

Unfortunately any debate on Wefare/Benefits rapidly descends into an exchange of clichéd arguments. Your response to the point made was the assumption that the claimant in question was some sort of work shy scrounger winging about his lot (which he is not - like 9 out of 10 people receiving some sort of Benefit he is working) so I responded with the Traditional "IDS Silver Spoon Rich Dad in Law Privileged Toff" retort.

Actually, as John Bird the founder of the Big Issue magazine was pointing out in the Times yesterday: "...we are now stuck in a myopic debate about whether (IDS) can get by on £53." His article is well worth reading, and does what is badly needed - moves away from sterile taunts into discussion of how this situation has arisen, and what to do about it.

Unfortunately you need to subscribe to read the full article, but if anyone is interested in his point of view, PM me and I will do my best to précis it for you.

Without wanting to sound cruel if you cant get by on £53 a week then there are 600,000 vacancies out there waiting for you (not you of course).

I gave the wife 20 pounds a fortnight ago and told her to make it last....if she can do it anyone can.

I don't think you read a single word of my reply...... There is absolutely no point having a debate if you (or the "Poverty Lobby" for that matter) aren't interested in moving away from sterile narrow-minded dogma.

People incapable of constructing a reasoned argument always resort to saying those that disagree with them are dogmatic and closed minded.

Make a proper argument! Others will read it and then respond. You are the one closing it down by making comments such as the above.

What is sterlie minded about saying if you dont earn enough go and do something about it. Its attitudes like yours with all due respects that have got the country in this mess. Its always someone elses fault and its someone elses reponsability to sort out problems.

Personally I think it you are fit and well enough to work the only thing stopping people doing well in life is there own lack of motivation.

:headbang::thump:

Are you fishing? Attitudes like mine? You haven't read a single word I've written. I absolutely believe that the current Welfare system is failing both the people who pay taxes towards it, and the people who receive the benefits. Your last sentence is puerile in the extreme, life isn't that simple - earlier you breezily advised people to go out and apply for the 600k jobs allegedly available. Trouble is that there are 2.5 million unemployed, so four people for every job - and that use of statistics is as simplistic and misleading as your original post.

What is needed is not judgemental pontifications about how people you have never met and know nothing about can only have themselves to blame for their predicament - it is thoughtful use of taxpayers money to maximise peoples skills and motivation while minimising Government expenditure, breaking this cycle of pointless expenditure achieving nothing. How can you disagree with that?
