Do you mean the guy with the hat with the feather and the sparkly jackets who used to do charity collections outside the British Heart Foundation shops opposite the Royals?

If so, I can confirm he is alive though not particularly well hence his disappearance from the High Street. But I am sure he would be delighted to know that someone thinks of him as one of Southend's characters. He certainly is and has a heart of gold.
