I don't subscribe to this 'loanees aren't our players' argument. Football has changed and these days most lower league sides have a few loan players in their squad. It's not like 20 years ago when you'd have maybe 1 or 2 in during a season if you had injuries or if you were struggling for form. Equally our own players are increasingly short contracts so they are arguably just people we've rented for a few months.

What I don't like is when we bring in loanees who don't add anything. Assombalonga, Egan, Sokolik were all players that clearly raised the bar, and that's what we need. Loza (twice), McQueen, Kamara - I'm not sure they added anything we didn't have already and as such I'm not sure why we bother. Their parent clubs will have learnt from the loan - they didn't set the world on fire in League 1, so perhaps that's an indication that their potential isn't all that great. But SUFC has gained very little - we got another squad player when we had a big squad already.
McQueen and Kamara weren't used properly or consistently, in fact 30 secs before McQueen made his debut Brown asked him if he had played central midfield before to which the answer was no !!!! All a bit keystone cop at times but hey you're not allowed to criticise the manager without being called a hater.

Manager's fault or not they were still loanees who didn't add much.

Ted Smith has played 2 matches for the Southampton academy away against everton at southports ground , And at st marys against aston villa.

You've missed the point, you can't blame the players and say "they didn't add much" if played out of position, Rea is another, centre back who was brought on as a sub in midfield a few times. Bizarre, totally bizarre at times.

Southend is Southend not Southampton , andit seems to me that we not doing to badly on producing Academy youngsters ourselves just recently, Bentley, Smith,Payne,Bridge,Moussa,Ferdinand,Kightly just to name a few.Yes we are a club that will always have to rely on bringing in some loanees as we not that rich, but as for becoming some othr clubs feeder club forget it.

The problem is it's often impossible to know if a player that looks alright in training will be any good in a real match, it's alright saying we should only bring in players that will add something but that's not an easy thing to do.

Rea actually played holding midfield for the Irish Under 21 side, so not an alien position for him.

I'm pretty sure the manager would have a say in his needs / requirements.
It would be "nice" to agree to return them if;
a they were played out of recognised position;
b; didn't fulfill expectation;
c we were not be tied into a "must feature in every game" situation.......

Unfortunately, in our current status, we do not hold the whiphand ......and, as such, it's a pretty hit and miss affair.

As has been proved over the last season.

Wise old sage after the event :whistling:

We have a highly respected academy ourselves. I certainly wouldn't object to a Southampton tie up as they have a set up every Prem club seems to envy.

In the last 6 months no one has been used properly or consistently because the squad got so large that it was easy for PB to chop and change when he felt like it. That coincided with our worst run of form under him as a manager - what he'd done well at previously was having a settled team where everyone knew their role.

You could say the squad needed an upgrade if we're to continue moving forwards, so the last few months have been about trying new players, new formations etc. If that's the case I'd say we haven't learned much and are no better off in terms of finding solutions for next season than we were at Christmas. That's the disappointment for me.

Perfect summary of the second half of our season.

It seemed that Kamara, Loza, etc. were brought in not because we particularly needed them, but to take a look at them with an eye on signing them permanently this summer. The fact that none have signed permanently (and it seems Barnett won't be either), reflects very poorly on Brown and his scouting team.

What's that got to do with it ? Clutching at straws lol

Did Paterson spend several years in the academy or was he brought down from Scotland and loaned out fairly soon after ?

Paterson grew up in Hampshire, I know a lad who used to play youth football with him and Matt Ritchie.

Paterson spent several years in their academy, same as Bale.

There are only so many inexperienced kids that you can play in a team and for every Southampton loanee we have, that would be one less place for one of our own kids from our highly respected academy.

It would be very short-sighted.

I therefore expect PB to be all over it.

i agree on that. McQueen looked like a quality player who should have been given a proper go and I was really impressed with Kamara but needed to be played in the middle, not wide right

Seems if we cnnot compete in the transfer market with massive big clubs like chesterfir=eld and shrewsbury ,we may as well become a feeder club :'(
