It would appear that last weekend an attempt was made on Southend-on-sea beach to break a world record: to photograph the most women wearing bikinis in one place.

The current world record stands at 1,923. Our Essex ladies fell 1,882 short.

Here are some photos of the brave 42 lasses who turned up:

Tell you what, if apathy was an Olympic sport, we'd be nailed on for the gold every time...

The organisers wouldn't let me and Cricko take part.

I fear that despite this being a bikini competition, and you two collectively making a right pair of t i t s of yourselves on a regular basis, the fact that you both require extra support when being let out on a Saturday night together automatically barred you from taking part ;)

I like the blue towel/sarongs, they were obviously a freeby to hide the thighs!

You know what? I'm not sure it was the Great British apathy that ruined this event. How is it that the first we hear about it is several days afterwards? With all the red-blooded perma-surfers that inhabit this site you'd think that much drool would have already been spilled in anticipation. No, what I think has killed this, is that other national characteristic - a sub-church fete level of publicity and advertising...

I think that there was a little bit of advertising on the radio. I knew about it as my friend did it last night, tho this year she was a little too hung over after a night out down the brush.

I reckon I could do better than what they did, and even beat the UK world record.
