Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-2 Rochdale

I've been away with work this weekend and managed to mix with a bit of pleasure. Got taken to the Wolves Arsenal game on Saturday and the one thing l noticed differing from us, was when under pressure at the back the Gooners gave it the big hoof up field or into touch and regroup. Also the tippy tappy stuff is played across the field much higher up than on the edge of their box.

It was an interesting evening watching how they play and those were the two key differences l noticed in how they play compared to us.

This thread is meant to be a post match thread not one to summarise the season.

Their no18 was placed in an undefended position behind Jack Bridge who was more than often in the oppo half and didn’t defend much at all. This put pressure on our centre backs.

We scored, took our foot off the gas and allowed Rochdale back into the game. The early press completely disappeared and we deserved what we got from this match l.e. Nothing.

Once again no creativity from midfield and ultra slow buildups meant Rochdale had bags of time to reorganise.

Mom for me was GSM.

FWIW thought probably the best thing about the match was that the existing squad (for no fault of theirs) proved they were clearly not good enough to get promotion .Still who cares? There's always next season.

I know you was a teacher and its not your specialist subject but 65 + 10 =?

I don't know about the rest of you lot, but I'm now totally drained emotionally on the Southend front. As with all big crowds at Roots Hall of late, when we scored it was go mad time, after that, loud noise on mute, and I don't think that helped the team. That said there was something missing, even after we scored, exhaustion and silly mistakes were commonplace. Nevertheless they kept on going but the Rochdale equaliser was a big time deflater for our Blue boys. It didn't help that the two clubs also vying for the last play off place were doing better than us. So, in the end, it wasn't to be. We clapped and cheered the squad on their lap of honour, said our goodbyes to our immediate mates sitting all around us, and then we made our way home listening to Kev being loud and proud about his group.

Special mention to @Tinks this afternoon, nice to meet you at last regardless of the dodgy company you were keeping :Winking: . I'm sorry conversation was brief, but no doubt we can chat more next season. Also good to briefly catch up with that Will-o-the-wisp @Spaceman Spiff for the first time this season.

Here's to next season and the hope that this time next season we will be celebrating as champions.
You lot in the West Certainly sounded like you were on mute (from the East) after the goal celebrations died down:Not supringly really -considering some of the dross on offer in the 2nd half, when the scores elsewhere must have gotten through to the players).

I don’t necessarily disagree with the Kensdale opinions because undoubtedly his mistakes has undone a lot of hard work in some games but I will jump to his defence (pun not intended).

We have one of the best defensive records in the league and I know other players contribute to that stat but Kensdale playing in the centre commands a lot of that responsibility, plus the fact he is the teams anchor dictating all play from the back highlights the risk he carries trying to play Maher’s style of football and I don’t think he should be completely criticised for doing so - you see these types of mistakes even at the highest level and that’s just the risk you take with this ‘passing out from the back’ style of football which Kensdale is instructed to do.

He’s a very very solid player who we are lucky to have and is a key reason why we sometimes play lovely football - plus he’s not even that old and seasoned to first team professional football. He’s important to us.
Maybe but Kensdale always looks like he's got a mistake in him to me.

I am a little undecided…how many mistakes did he make this season that led to goals? I am not sure he is comfortable enough on the ball to play the way we play. It does seem to be an issue up and down the leagues. Think of the likes of Dunk and McGuire….good defensively..terrible passing it about on the floor.

I can think of a least 3 goals that have come from a Kemsdale mistake this season….and others where he has got away with it!
I’m surprised you follow football at this level,Gareth S. At this level,Dunk and Maguire would indeed be defensively good, but nowhere near international level (you need to have some pace !)

3 goals over the course of a season is nothing.

He has been part of a defence that conceded just 45 goals all season - best in division by 4 goals.

The season before he was in a defence that conceded 45 goals.

Players make mistakes even at international level. It happens.

I’m sure he knows he screwed up but if he doesn’t try things we don’t score our goal, which came from him playing out from the back, or from his burst forward at Solihull where he played in Cardwell, or that Bridge goal v Boring Wood when he played it out from the back etc etc. In the grand scheme of things he’s well in the positive.
