SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin has warned the Shrimpers squad they must shape up to avoid being shipped out.

Nice to hear that he likes Sol, just needs to get that tattoo of Henrik removed then they can cement their relationship

Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in that changing room Sunday. It's all gone off

Well at last you've found your voice Ron. Lets ear mark the ones that need to go, we can tell you that. Bring in some quality loanees that want to make their mark as professional players.
Lets start with a decent keeper!

I'm not blowing smoke up his arse for stating the obvious. He has been partially responsible for these terrible signings plus handing out long lucrative contracts to average players like Demetriou, Oxley and McLaughlin in recent years.

Until he appoints a decent CEO, we'll continue to have problems bringing in the right players and manager will continue to be undermined.

Well personally that's exactly the kind of thing I want to hear from the top. He's basically backed Sol to the hilt there, sent a very clear message to those players who don't want to be here that they'll be gone .. I'm really not sure what else he could've said without naming names. His rallying call reads like a SZ post from the last few months. Yup I ignored the inevitable stuff about the future/FF etc. We'll believe it when we see it Ron. But ... encouraging and on the back of last night's result maybe the turning point for SUFC. Let's hope as much ...

Didn't he mention a big announcement in November in the last Talksport interview....no doubt gone the same way as every FF promise of the last 12 years.Did think that his whole tone was different to previously as he has now realised barring a miracle we are down. The financial impact of missing a League Cup tie with Liverpool and the humiliation of Dover and lost revenue must be seriously affecting what can be done in Jan after deducting what Sol must be on .Just where is the money coming from as gates will be struggling this season unless there is a chance of escape.
I now think we have got the right man and team in but what a mess to be to find him

Managers select the targets and players they want - not Ron. He has backed them to the hilt and either the recruitment, management thereafter or both have been shocking since PB left.

Don't see how we can blame Ron for supporting his managers and he must feel more let down than anyone as it's his ££. That said at some point surely someone should have said why do we need 8 CMs who are all similar and no wide players (especially when the numpty managers concerns claimed they wanted to play 442 that by definition requires a LM and a RM..). Its not just the quality and motivation of players signed, but also the fact that we have ended up with such a clearly lopsided squad with no cover in certain key areas.

The funny is that with the exception of Ridgewell, I actually thought the squad was stronger. The signings on paper looked good.Scottish football outside of Rangers and Celtic must be woefully weak

That's what happens when you don't replace the Chief Exec so yes it's Ron's fault.

This chief exec thing everybody craves.
I'll give you one example I have detailed knowledge of: Fulham.
They had/have a CEO (he's been moved sideways) responsible for a squad of players that relegated them from the PL in 2014.
They decided to go the stats way, and appoint a 'Moneyball' man to spot talent by way of spreadsheet.
When Slavisa Jokanovic finally wrestled the reins away from this joker, they were promoted back to the PL in 2018.
Then the owner's son took over recruitment and he promptly relegated them again last season.
Chief exec? Stats man? Owner's son? Manager?
Which one obtained the best results? It's not an exact science no matter who you choose.

Ok but Kavanagh has a better success ratio than Ron when it comes to signings yes ?

Surely you have to be mindful that the managers didn't actually have the funds to go out and buy any players, we have to rely on picking up freebies. So maybe the wallet isn't being opened as much as you think?

No quite true. Ron has been offered players who he wants to sign.
