Pre-Match Thread Southend United v Stockport County

I dont think Spencer will be left wing unless its as part of a 4-3-3.

With Hall and Zaaboub out do we have much other choice with the players we have at the moment?

I would like the see the 4-3-3 as I think Soares and Spencer will benefit down the flanks and they both have the legs to get back when we're defending.

barry corr is awful id rather play evans (the goalie) upfront than him cant pass cant score and is not a target man either

Having now watched all our pre season games and been very impressed with what Sturrock is trying to achieve I am of the opinion that we can field a half decent L2 side that can hold their own, however, I do think that at home we need to be pressing our advantaged.

I still think Paterson is our best offensive player. He and Bilel when they came on last night 'lifted' us and showed just how football can be played. For 20 minutes we were really very good! Both these players to me have MASSIVE potential and I hope both are given the starts that their pre season form deserves.

Gill I thought was pretty influential and I hope that he is signed and started. Prosser was very good and Grant and Easton seem to have midfield sorted.

I am not convinced with Soares on the wing and Spencer is not a winger so think Sturrock needs to think long and hard about both players. Corr actually showed me a lot more against WH. He is a winner of headers and an attacker of the ball, and I think he really needs another striker playing alongside him.

For me last night the best player on the field was our left back Barker, what a signing he could be!

Roll on Saturday I can't wait!!

Having been coming to the Hall for the past 3 seasons (period of exile since late 70's) I feel having seen the Derby & Wham games that whilst we have an untried side (bar Grant) we can certainly hold our own at this level. There just seems more desire and hunger and my sixth sense tells me that this is going to be a good season. Don't know why but just do. Blues two one.

why do you think hes good then his goal scoring record is awful everywhere and he didnt look like he could win a header or work hard either waste of space

From what I've seen in the games against Derby and West Ham he'll win a lot more headers than Revell and Harrold who were both played in the same role and that's against teams at a higher level, no he isn't going to score 20 goals this season but he'll chip in with a few.

Because he isn't the next Eastwood he'll be the next target for the boo boys.

Very true, but one thing is that at least it will be the people that support the club through thick and think :support:

I agree with you Jack. Since I've been on the Zone nigh on two years now, I've been impressed with our fans' diverse thoughts on the issues that matter to us - no matter what the scenario, you can bet us Shrimpers will have a whole range of views on the subject. I can't be with you guys on Saturday unfortunately as the war chest has taken one helluva beating this last year. Also, there have been some who have suggested unkindly that my presence at the League games I went to last season cost us the points, ie 13 games, no win. Only Richie C's record was worse (I think) as at least I saw us win at Cheltenham in the League Cup. So, perhaps it's best for me to retreat a while in any case. However, I'll be thinking of y'all - particularly Paulie on his stag launch - and wondering just how this crazy new set-up will turn out. I'm glad we're playing Stockport as they've been through the ringer themselves and may not have a great deal of confidence about their new season. I hope that we have a greater defensive stolidity than we had last season and that the central midfield partnership of Granty and Easton provides a good bulwark from which we can play in these exciting new wingers I've heard about. I hope Paterson and Screech get the chance to play together too, but my guess is that PS will start with Corr in order to get amongst the Hatters' defence. So, here's wishing us a great start to the new season and era - come on, you Blues! :support:

I'm half hoping that we lose, we always seem to do much better when we lose the first game at home........
Recently I would agree!!

We beat stoke in the champoinship year and it all went pete after that...

Believe we lost to Port Vale and then went up , and dont remember the league one year , but I'm sure we lost that one too..

Odds for Saturday...

Southend 11/10 (bet365, BlueSq, BetFred)
Draw 12/5 (betFred, BlueSq, Stan James, Ladbrokes)
Stockport 11/4 (Ladbrokes)

Win 4-2 with Patterson(Hat-trick) and Spencer. Crowd 4,800. Stockport fans will be looking for trouble after last game of season even though it was nothing to do with Southend fans and I have a all day pass from the mrs, meaning Breakfast at sailsbury cafe, drnking from 11am in railway go to game (Moan like mad) back to the pub and than on to seymours for a truly dreadful night!!!
What a day. By the way Still want martin out!!!

Port Vale was the year we went up from League One, lost 2-1 with a Wayne Gray over head kick if I remember?

I don't reckon we will concede a goal. Its just a matter of if we are able to find the net ourselves.
I'm going to be positive and say we will so 1 - 0 the shrimpers!! Crowd under 6000.
Morris, Clohessy, Barker, Easton, Prosser, Phillips, Soares, Grant, Corr, Simpson, Spencer.
Subs: Evans, Coughlan, Mosni, Patterson, Sturrock.+

I'll be coming along to the game, probably feeling a bit odd as it will be the first Southend game I've been to for a long time. If I remember rightly, Barry Fry was the manager last time I came to Roots Hall. It's going to feel really weird.

On the plus side, I'm used to watching my local non-league side, so this will feel like a great big occasion and a massive crowd to me, whatever happens. :)
