So, we've played our last game of the year, a thoroughly pleasing 4-1 away win at 10-man Wimbledon. This means that we have finished the year in 3rd place in League 2 (although we should be in second place, Aldershot), up 14 places from the end of 2010.

As a result of the snow in December 2010, we played a bumper 49 league games this year. We won 24 of those, drew 11, and lost 14, giving us a total of 83 points in the calendar year. This equates to 1.6something a game, and would result in 77 points over the course of a regular-length season - in other words, comfortable play-off form.

These figures are, of course, fairly meaningless given the change in players, opposition teams etc. However, the end of a calendar year gives as good a reason as any to look at form over an extended period, and ours has been pretty satisfying. This is, remember, in spite of what many people were suggesting was a very poor end to last season's league campaign.

So Sturrock has had us averaging 1.6 points over a calendar year. If we can continue that over the first half of the next season we should be guaranteed of a play-off place at the very least.

This should be very satisfying to Shrimpers, and must be seen as a huge improvement on 2010, in which we average...well I don't know, but a lot less than 1.6 points a game!

Happy new year Shrimpers, let's ring it in with a drink to Luggy!

style of play aside you have to say a massive well done to Paul Sturrock we all know what a terrible situation we were in, yet he came in sorted out a squad in very short time and in the end there was a little disappointment that we missed out on the play offs last season, now we go into the 2nd half of this season challenging for the title sitting nicely in the automatic promotion spots, how the extreme criticism posted on here lately can really be justified when looking at the bigger picture is beyond me. Points mean prizes and by hook or by crook we seem to be collecting plenty of them.

Think we need more than 1.6 points per match to get up automatically.
This squad is stronger than last season where we fell short in the final 2 months.
Any manager would be pleased with 50% win rate and Sturrock is one of the best.
Many say we over performed in the 17 match unbeaten run, but a similar run is needed to get us promoted, but overall 2011 was a good year.
Would love to see Paul Sturrock leading us into Fossetts Farm and wish him well in all he does.

Last season, Wycombe got the 3rd promotion place with 80 points = 1.739 points per game.
So far this season we average 2.045 ppg = 94 in a season.

1.6 points x 24 games = 38.4 (say 38) + the current 45 points we already have = 83

Probably enough to get 3rd (just). The current 3rd place team have 41 points so would need to get 43 from 23 games to overhaul us, which is 1.9 points per game.

Problem is Shrewsbury/Swindon/Burton could all go on that sort of run. I think a high points total is going to be needed this season.
