Official Match Thread Southend v Portsmouth (EFL Trophy)

We changed half our team, with most of those missing being experienced players we don't want to risk. Portsmouth changed their team, but difference is they managed to bring in a £1.5m striker.

Anyone surprised we got hammered?

Only thing I am worried about is Gard's injury and the potential psychological affect.

Yes, Exeter are a quality side. We will need a lot of luck........
Luck, yes. Hopefully they have an off day..my main worry is where the goals will come from. Let’s hope Akinola when fit and this new fella help out. That save from Rush was the first shot we had all game I think! Conceding goals is one thing, if we can’t create enough in the final third and get enough shots in it’ll be a long old season.

Again, a couple of really nice bits of play, but unfortunately both ending with Egbri being a little too lightweight.

It always hurts being beaten so comfortably whether it's a youth team, EFL Trophy or not, but things are not going to change overnight. We've been mismanaged and neglected from the very top for four years.

We're rebuilding, we're bringing players in and we're still only four league games into the season.

Don't get me wrong, we are absolutely woeful. But we just need two clubs to be more woeful than us come May, and we have time on our side, a highly respected manager, and most of the bad eggs out of the club.

My biggest concern is actually that our luck with injuries is showing no signs of improving. We need a lot of luck on that score this season and it's not started well at all.

I agree it's a nothing game.
But will the players dismiss a trouncing so easily?
The mental thing of losing heavily after a decent draw is the worry.
Kids, and all that...
It’s only 3-0, against one of the top sides from the league above, it’s the sort of result you’d expect. It’s not that heavy a defeat with all things considered.

I imagine Molesley would have told them before the match to treat it as a friendly/training match. And half of them won’t be in the side on Saturday anyway so I doubt this result with have much mental impact going forwards.
