Hi all, these last 3 and a bit seasons have no doubt been the worst in our history performance wise and it occurs to me that there can hardly be many, if any, other clubs that have had a poorer playing record over say a 4 year spell... I know that Northampton back in the 60’s created a record for going through all the 4 divisions via promotions and then successive relegations but our own record these past few years must be pretty hard to beat !

Any stato’s among us that can quote chapter and verse ?

Our record in the last three seasons plus this one is as follows:
2018/19: W14, D8, L24 (League 1)
2019/20: W4, D7, L24 (League 1)
2020/21: W10, D15, L21 (League 2)
2021/22: W3, D2, L10 (National League)

Overall: W31, D32, L79 (W% 21.83, L% 55.63)

Northampton’s record as they fell from the First to Fourth Division was:
1965/66: W10, D13, L19 (Div 1)
1966/67: W12, D6, L24 (Div 2)
1967/68: W14, D13, L19 (Div 3)
1968/69: W14, D12, L20 (Div 3)

Overall: W50, D44, L82 (W% 28.41, L% 46.59)

However, spare a though for Brechin City, now of the Scottish Highland League. Having been promoted to the Championship via the play-offs in 2016/17, they were relegated with 4 points the following season, went straight through League 1 and were given a stay of execution in 2019/20 when the season was voided due to Covid, then relegated after finishing bottom of League 2 last season and losing the pyramid play-off to Kelty Hearts. Their win percentage was only a little above half of ours in the past three-and-a-half seasons, and their loss percentage almost 15% higher.

2017/18: W0, D4, L32 (Championship)
2018/19: W9, D9, L18 (League 1)
2019/20: W4, D5, L18 (League 2)
2020/21: W2, D4, L16 (League 2)

Overall: W15, D22, L84 (W% 12.40, L% 69.42)

@Exiled Shrimper thanks so much for taking the time to provide this research. So a pre season Scottish friendly against Brechin must surely be on the cards ! I wonder what their fans forum makes of it all !! ??

So the last 4 years we have been statistically the worst team over that length of period in the entire history of English football?

Carlisle United were top of the first division and they got relegated.......All in the same season!

Carlisle won their first three games in Division One in 74/75 beating Chelsea, Spurs and Middlesbrough. They only won nine more and were relegated along with Chelsea and Luton (Derby were champions that year). Carlisle lost ten games by 2-1 which must have been infuriating. They only drew five games so achieved a total of 29 points. Had three points been awarded for a win they would have gained 41 points.

Looks spot on, wonderful, thanks Ron, and some wonder why people are absolutely at the end of their tether, Thanks ES for hard work on the stats !!

In that 18/19 Season things seemed to start going wrong at the start of the new year.

We started with a win against gillingham which I think was the game we scored in while they were arguing about whether they had scored at the other end.

If you look at our results after that game it was W3, D6 L11 (Win percentage 15%)

If you looked at our win percentage to date since after that gillingham game our win percentage drops from the 21.83% quoted above to 20 wins from 116 games (17.24%)

For the layman.

Less than 1 win in every 4 matches over 4 years.

A defeat every other game, guaranteed over 4 years.

I hope this simple and factual graphic will give supporters an idea of the importance now of doing things correctly. And we are.
This isn't minor tweaks with a smiley new manager bounce, this is major surgery on a scale that the club hasn't faced in its history.

The “surgery” analogy is a good way of fans understanding the level of the job ahead for SUFC.
Minor surgery....days to weeks for recovery.
Major surgery....months to possibly a year.

Stop expecting the impossible!

This is a good synopsis, however.....

Our current situation could well be descried as SUFC have decided that major surgery is needed but it's taking a while to decide how it's done or to find donors for the parts required. In the mean time the patient is on life support and is in danger of dying before the surgery takes place.

The addition of the 2 Sheff Utd lads has been excellent, but we need more and quickly to prevent us kicking the bucket.

The additonal of the 2 Sheff Utd lads have been an excellent couple of additions, but we need more and quickly to prevent us kicking the bucket.

Also finding someone who is still willing to deal with the club to assist with the surgery, we have burnt so many bridges over the past few years, Donors and ”surgeons” May still be hard to come by.
The job of rebuilding us is huge!
