Following on from the "Longest Serving Supporter?" thread I, like many on here, made my first visit to Swindon just over 47 years ago:

4th January 1969
Swindon Town 0-2 Southend United
F,A. Cup Round 3
Goalscorers; Billy Best and Ian Hamilton
Attendance; 18,828

The question is has anyone been to an earlier match at Swindon?

That's me beaten, but if we are rounding up trips to Swindon, I've been twice :-

2-2 draw when Ricky Otto scored that amazing goal and a dull 0-0 draw on a Tuesday night in the 81-82 season.

My first trip there was actually as a neutral, in 1998. Studying in Reading, they had an away game at Swindon and me and a mate thought it would make for a fun Saturday afternoon and an opportunity to 'tick off' another ground.

What we didn't realise (being new to Reading) was that there is something of a rivalry between the two clubs and rather than a fun afternoon of pubs and football, we, along with everyone else arriving on the train, received a police escort to and from the ground.

To compound it all, listening to the scores on the radio on the way back to the station, Southend had lost at home to Walsall and it was only the quick reactions of my mate that stopped me launching the radio at a wall.

This one?

Yay, like an old friend.

Thanks, Seventies.

I'm up there behind the goal somewhere.

Players you forgot played for the club : Graham Bressington

First time, a rubbish 0-0 under Ronnie Whelan nearly 20 years ago. The last time a 2-1 defeat under Tilson, when we were relegated that season. Christophe was sent off for not much. Next time, tomorrow.

Nope, never forgotten his penalty miss that could have taken us to wembley.

Ah, that Anglo Italian semi-final?

I was there.

Couldn't see the penalties as they were up the other end in the fog!

Briefly worked and lived near Swindon in the late seventies - saw a few matches there with the lovely Dave Cunningham turning out for the Robins - was his usual charming self

I went to a game there when Simon Francis got a lucky goal and we won 1-0 ( I think)

Like you DoDTS, this was my first visit to Swindon. Also recall 'The Pak' stood in the Swindon end?. Only other time i went there, was in 75!.

I made the trip in 1969 and then the next round to Mansfield. My memory is of Mel Slack marking Don Rogers out of the game, he was a big player at that time. Mansfield I remember walking to the ground past all the slag heaps and being pelted with coal by the home supporters. A cold wet day and we lost.

Went in the late 70's or early 80's. We got attacked up the open end and mayhem broke out on the terraces. A guy I still see around town, long hair, pony tail, goes to live music - well he just stood amidst the fighting shouting "I will not be intimidated".
I mentioned my memory to him at a jazz night last year - he just smiled. Still a peaceful hippy.

Sometime mid to late 70s for me, unlike you blokes, I remember nothing about the day other than the fact I had my wonderful dad to myself on a road trip.

That was my first visit and the game ranks in my top 4 away performances. The other 3. are 6-1 at Bournemouth(League Cup)3-0 at Bristol City (Eastwood birthday hat trick) and 2-1 at Hartlepool (first away FACup replay win for 70 years ).But what was special about this win?
We were in Division 4,they were right at the top of Div 3-they were promoted, they only lost one other game at home all season. In the other Cup competition, the League Cup..........they reached the final(including 5 home wins, some replays) and then beat Arsenal 3-1 at Wembley .
At a recent home game,I met up with someone else who was very prominent that afternoon ,in the home end : Ian Leask.

I went with the late Bob Jennings , met Harry for the first time had a mate with him called Trevor Jefferies .

The highlights of the 2-2 draw are memorable! Not only The goal by Otto but it reminded me just how great a
keeper Sammy was. Surely one of the best(and complete) keepers we've ever had. Loved the man.

I remember that one. Willy Rushton didn't we call him?? Thommo and I got run down to the turnstiles buy three guys re-enacting a french TV programme...."The flashing blade" so discretion was the beter part of valour. we lost 1-0 to boot. I think we all ended up down on the lower corner of the terrace after we regrouped. I think it was '79 and that was my first trip there and Swindon have always been near the top of my clubs to dislike list ever since. had better trips there to say the least both result wise and more pleasent. ....Some parts of football from the 70's you just don't miss.

It doesn't sound like much of your post has anything to do with football - it was just violence (and using football as a hook to hang that violence on) that a small minority of people were involved with ........... without consideration or a thought towards the majority and of course to the detriment of the majority .......... and we (the majority) are still paying the price today for that.
