That's one chairman, nine players - including three who went onto manage us, a further two managers who hadn't played for us, a groundsman and a supporters club secretary.

Of the nine players there are four defenders (Powell, Moody, Clark, Prior), two midfielders (Pountney and Tilson) and three forwards (Collymore, Best and Eastwood).

Nominees must have left the club at least two years and receive five nominations. You can only nominate once person each round.

Jimmy McAlinden https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_McAlinden

Despite joining The Shrimpers when in the twilight of his career, McAlinden is still regarded as perhaps the club’s finest ever player. He was club captain and penalty expert, his range of passing was beyond anything seen before or since at the club and he rejected a number of offers from other ‘larger’ clubs – “I would never move sideways” he claimed. In 1948 he won his fourth and final Ireland cap, the first awarded to a post-War Southend player, in a 6-2 defeat by England.

JIMMY McALINDEN
1948-54

When SUFC President John Woodcock was asked shortly before his death in 2001 who his favourite player was, he said "Jimmy McAlinden" without a moments hesitation. Born in Belfast, Jimmy McAlinden played as a teenager for Belfast Celtic, won an Irish Cup winners medal, 2 Northern Ireland caps and then moved to Portsmouth. He won the 1939 Cup Final with Portsmouth when they beat Wolves 4-1. The war interrupted what would have been a glittering career. After the war he resigned for Portsmouth. He won 2 caps for Eire and then a third Northern Ireland cap against England in 1947.He then moved to Stoke but was signed for the Shrimpers in October 1948.
