Chesterfield have a definite edge in head-to-head league matches, winning 26 to our 19, with 13 draws. We last beat them at Roots Hall thanks to a solitary goal from Adam Thompson just over seven years ago.

Saturday’s rather tricky looking televised match is due to be refereed by Stephen Parkinson from Watford, a former teacher of German who now works in health and well-being. This is his first full season at this level although he did do a couple of games towards the end of last season.

He has refereed 11 matches at National League or above so far this season producing 39 yellows and 2 reds. These games include 3 EFL Trophy matches and an FA Cup 1st round match.

Amongst those games was our home victory over Maidenhead on the night of the rats. He had a good match and there was a yellow card apiece, ours going to Demetriou.

Prior to this season, he has been Fourth Official or Assistant in our games half a dozen times, mostly at Roots Hall.

Assistants are Ryan Head from the Norwich area and Colman O'Meara a legal support officer at Middlesex University who performed a similar role amidst the plastic rats that evening and again against Ebbsfleet last month. Fourth Official will be Harry Wager, a Police Officer from Tunbridge Wells involved in his first Southend match.

Wonder how he will be with a big crowd and tv cameras many times in the past refs seem to play different when blues on tv ???

It makes a nice change for us to get a 50/50 penalty. It would have been a ten minute delay if we were using VAR. On balance I think it was just inside the area, but Lady Luck was on our side for once, so I will take it.

Not often I comment on this thread but the West stand lino deserves castration with a blunt spoon for not raising his flag for offside against Chesterfield at the start of their goal scoring attack.

If you are talking about their goal then that was one of the few decisions he got right.

Ralph was playing him onside when the first long ball was played

Having watched on the TV. Chesterfield first goal, looked offside in real time. We are talking about the long ball forward, everything else was fine. Much closer on replay, but not really shown at the right angle. Can understand why flag never went up, but also could easily have gone up, and would of been a close VAR call.

Penalty definitely in the box, although the ball was outside. 2nd penalty shout, nope of the melee from the cross, looked stonewall on the edge of the box afterwards, but no replay shown.

Cardwell offside, again tight, same as Chesterfield goal, was given, could easily not have been. Both marginal decisions given by west stand lino given to Chesterfied.

Grigg chance at end, again close, but defo offside and would probably have not been given.

Overall a pretty ropey performance from assistants, not the ref.

we don't want or need VAR
