Chesterfield have a definite edge in head-to-head league matches, winning 26 to our 19, with 13 draws. We last beat them at Roots Hall thanks to a solitary goal from Adam Thompson just over seven years ago.
Saturday’s rather tricky looking televised match is due to be refereed by Stephen Parkinson from Watford, a former teacher of German who now works in health and well-being. This is his first full season at this level although he did do a couple of games towards the end of last season.
He has refereed 11 matches at National League or above so far this season producing 39 yellows and 2 reds. These games include 3 EFL Trophy matches and an FA Cup 1st round match.
Amongst those games was our home victory over Maidenhead on the night of the rats. He had a good match and there was a yellow card apiece, ours going to Demetriou.
Prior to this season, he has been Fourth Official or Assistant in our games half a dozen times, mostly at Roots Hall.
Assistants are Ryan Head from the Norwich area and Colman O'Meara a legal support officer at Middlesex University who performed a similar role amidst the plastic rats that evening and again against Ebbsfleet last month. Fourth Official will be Harry Wager, a Police Officer from Tunbridge Wells involved in his first Southend match.
