Leigh: Historic fishing boat relaunched
Brought to you by the Evening Echo
Hundreds of people showed up to see historic fishing boat the Endeavour being relaunched at Strand Wharf in an Old Leigh.

The cockle boat, which was used to rescue soldiers from Dunkirk in 1940, recently returned to Leigh after major renovation.

The Rev Margaret Millar, leader of the Methodist churches in Leigh, reclaunched the boat with a bottle of champaign which she broke from an RNLI boat.

Mike King, treasurer of the Endeavour Trust, estimated 200 to 250 people turned up to witness the ceremony.

"It was very successful," he said. "People came up and said how great it is that the Endeavour is back.

"There is a tremendous community spirit in Leigh, and because of this we had the enthusiasm to get things done."

The Endeavour will be crossing the English Channel between May 24 and 29 to mark the 65th anniversary of Dunkirk.
