It's fantastic that just as our beloved club is succeeding on the pitch, reaching the Championship, and with a new stadium finally on the way, things are on the up that should make people sit up and notice Southend and want to come here again.

Redevelopment of the seafront
A brand new stadium complex with hotel
Travel Centre
New Victoria Plaza shopping centre
Possibly a new Supercasino
Road and traffic flow improvements
Thames Gateway projects / East of England Development Agency projects
and a new Radio Station to boot.

Check it out:

And also not forgetting:

The Burnt Out Pier
The Sagging Cliffs
Closed Down Toilets
Un Cut Grass
£1.20 per Hour Parking in the Town Centre

Oh and of course Camp Bling !!!!!!!!

Welcome to the 'New' Southend

One for today:

Southend has been singled out as a blackspot for railway crime following a spate of worrying incidents, including arson and a trespasser narrowly avoiding death under an oncoming train's wheels.

Network Rail, which is responsible for railway lines, stations and property, has so far recorded more than 20 incidents of vandalism and trespass this year alone, in the borough.

These included one occasion, in February, when a trespasser was nearly hit by a oncoming train at Southend Victoria station on February 13.

Other incidents included: * Trespassers spraying graffiti on the bridge at Southend Central station on April 21.

* Children setting off fireworks on the line at Southend Victoria the next day.

* Youths setting fire to a trackside hut at Southend Victoria on June 16.

Network Rail now plans to invest £15,000 in a series of visits to local schools by its education team and Southend United's Football in the Community team.

The aim is to teach young people about the dangers of trespassing on the railway and vandalising railway property. Children will test their football skills in safety-related games.

Network Rail's route director, Jon Wiseman, said: "Every year, hundreds of young people risk their lives by trespassing on the tracks and unfortunately, the railway around Southend is a problem area.

"Our visits to local schools are a great way for us to encourage young people to get involved in healthy activities, such as football, instead of risking their lives on the railway."

The scheme with Southend United has already been running for five years and last year about 26 schools were visited.

Network Rail also runs the No Messin'! campaign, which encourages young people to take part in activities such as boxing and football, instead of trespassing on the railway.

As many as 60 people are killed on the railways every year, after straying onto the tracks.

Railway crime is estimated to cost Network Rail £264million a year.

Southend has it's problems like most other places but is definitely on the up.
Personally I love the place and can honestly say I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the country at the moment. Sure, Devon and Cornwall are nice but I haven't given up on life yet.
I usually get derogatory remarks when people ask me where I'm from when I'm on holiday or whatever, but let's face it, most people who ask are from crapholes far worse than Southend and have never even been here.
Southend, Essex and proud. Nuf said.

£1.20?? Try £2.80 per hour down here in brighton. According to NCP, they could justify a £1.20 per hour price hike in the last year due to 'inflation'

Thankfully the rest of the city rocks

Parking is 70p an hour if you use the big off-street car-park at Warrior Square.

I lived in Herts on & off for 27 yrs and always thought of Southend as a bit pikey and crap.........then i moved there...well, Leigh anyway.

I lived there for 3 years and have a great love for Southend now, even more so than my home town/county. My memories are fonder of Essex than they are of Herts.
Southend is a great place and its a shame that people outside have got the wrong end of the stick about it.

I will however stay here in Perth though

Beaver time to take some uppers mate.

1. The Pier has re-opened so not burnt out just nothing left apart from the RNLI at the end.

2. Only a small part is sagging

3. Well at least it keeps cottaging to a minimum.

4. Well it appears grass round my way is now cut. i guess the dry spell prompted fears of forest fires.

5. Where the hell do you pay that? And if you think that is bad many places in the UK is much more expensive then Southend.

In Portsmouth, they seem uncontent until they have the shirt off your back. Unless you know where to go of course...
