The Wire

I'm currently ploughing through all seven seasons of 'Homicide: Life on the Street', widely regarded as the precursor to 'The Wire'. Based on the book by David Simon, with Barry Levinson as Executive Producer, and featuring many of the same actors as well as being set on location in Baltimore, it's easy to see why. Although not as edgy as 'The Wire' (mainly due to being on Network TV), the show was still hard-hitting and unconventional with superb storylines and great acting from the likes of Andre Braugher and Yaphet Kotto. It also introduced the legendary character Det John Munch (Richard Belzer) to the viewing public. I would urge all Wire fans to give it a tumble if they haven't already.

If you like your crime drama from this side of the Atlantic I can recommend 'The Boys in Blue' with early appearances from Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball.

It's even bleaker than The Wire which at least contains a few laughs to lighten the mood.

I finished Season Five yesterday. What a fantastic show with everything rounded off in a satisfactory fashion (apart from that prick Templeton getting the Pulitzer and Gus being busted down to the copy desk; that annoyed me).

Season Four was the pick of the bunch for me, those boys were all such intriguing characters and I had a huge interest in how they were all going to end up. BTW, I got 13/16 in that Guardian quiz.

Best drama series ever? Well when I embarked on The Wire odyssey I thought The Sopranos would take some beating, but Baltimore beats Jersey. Just.

The Sopranos is the best thing I have ever seen on TV and one of the reasons I started to wear a black Fila tracksuit to work like Chris and Paulie.

What's the general consensus on 'Dexter'? Have just ploughed through the first four seasons in readiness for the Season 5 premiere on Sunday night, and I was incredibly impressed. Well written, well crafted and darker than Dominic Iorfa's goolies, the last season with John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer was as good as anything that HBO have come up with to date. Season 5 has a lot to live up to, but it started well.

I have heard good things but never indulged.

It's on my radar once I have finished re-watching all six series of The Sopranos. It's amazing how many lines you miss the first time round.

My favourite so far is from Paulie:

"Ginny Sack is so fat when she goes camping the bears have to hide their food."

Yep... I'm thinking Dexter could be a decent enough time filler until Boardwalk Empire is released, and they're going for £10 a series on Amazon at the moment.

I've only heard good things about Dexter, but that said I've not taken the plunge myself. Got so much TV stacked up to watch. I'm catching up on House at the minute as well as watching The Wire through for a second time.

I'm gettng a hankering for some 24 too....

Will stick Dexter on my list. Second episode of boardwalk empire was weak last night but will stick with it. Last 3 episodes of sopranos saved for tomorrow night

I've watched since the first series was shown on Sky1 and been hooked ever since, Season 3 with Jimmy Smits was outstanding and series 4 is shaping up very well with John Lithgow, although I'm hoping we won't get to see his arse again. I'll look forward to Season 5.
