The Wire

After 3 repeat viewings, series 2 is probably my favourite too, however just finished 4 again and it's absolutely superb. Looking forward now to rewatching series 5 because I always rush it as I can't get enough!

"what's the plural of pussy?"

I had to wipe a tear from my eye when Bubbles joined his family at the dinner table, but I was praying for a decent end for Duquey - alas, it was not to be.

Bubbles being allowed out of the basement and Carver getting a promotion were the only happy endings in the final montage. I felt sad for the Dukey character, as out of the kids of s4 he was the most likeable of the bunch yet it was Namond who got the clean break.

Agree with that Kenny, 100%. I know it wouldn't have been consistent with the feel of the whole show to have a 'happy' ending, but I'm a sucker for the 'Rocky' style conclusion - there's enough grim reality in the real world. I really feel that Dukey deserved to get out of the gutter, perhaps go and live with Prezbo. It broke my heart that he traipsed around in that free Carcetti sweatshirt for a few episodes - there was just something hideously sad about that.

I thought the show was far too bleak and depressing.

If I was the producer I would probably have cast that bloke that makes the sound effects in from Police Academy to lighten the mood a bit.

BTW - probably one of the best scenes in the whole five series:

Snoop makes a purchase.

what gets me is surely Bunk would have gone around the local hardware stores to see if someone remembered selling a powder-activated nail gun to someone who seemed a little suspicious.

Another brilliant (and sad) scene: (from Series 5, so don't watch if haven't got up to it yet)

Bunk visits Randy

****ing Herc

I'm not sure what a happy ending would have been, or rather how would a happy ending be achieved - allowing Hamsterdam? Even if a Namond and a Bubbles occasionally break the cycle as individuals there are always others ready to step in and take their role - as we saw with Dukie becoming Bubbles, Michael becoming Omar and whoever took Namond's role. Even institutionally you've got Valchek replacing Burrell, Sydnor replacing Jimmy, Carver replacing Daniels. That's why you've got those shots of the sun-rises and sun-sets over Baltimore before that montage and why it finishes with the original version of Way Down in the Hole.

Anyway, awesome, awesome show.

couldn't have put it better myself. I still wish that they'd got 13 instead of 10 episodes for S5.

I wish they'd gone for 13 series.

(assuming they could keep the standard up)

agree, however as you say by the end of the 5th series the 'story' has done a perfect full circle, it simply is phenomenal writing and phenomenal TV.

How many Wire fans are familiar with the earlier HBO series OZ? Absolutely superb prison drama, with most of the actors from The Wire featuring. Went for six seasons, although each only had eight episodes (except Season 4, which had 16).

Oz was fantastic! Starred Michael out of Lost as an inmate in a wheelchair IIRC.
