Memory Lane Things that used to be there but now are not.

A bowling alley on the pier! I used to live in there, bowling in leagues 4 times a week. The Kursaal just isn't the same.

Was it you who dropped the match?

No but at lot of my colleagues lost their bowling balls that day. We had a company league when I worked for CE Heath (the old Heath House along Vic Avenue which has been boarded up for a while but I understand there's problems demolishing due to asbestos) and most of the people had lockers down there, I was on the waiting list so had to carry my ball into work every Thursday. On the day it burnt down everyone was Discussing about their bowling balls melting but mine was safely next to my desk. I think it was a Wednesday in early June, not sure why I took my ball into work a day early, probably out on the lash that night.

When they built the new road link connecting the A127 and Rochford, must have been about 15 years ago now, they took most of the pitches away from Eastwoodbury lane. It used to have loads of pitches, like a mini hackney marshes. I scored one of my greatest goals on what is now a road.

The dolphinarium & the outdoor swiming pool on the seafront! Very vague memories, but I do remember being taken there when I was a tot!

I nominate Jeans. In my day they made them to wear around the waist not just above the groin. Do any ladies find this remotely attractive ?

Where HMV is, they "modernised" the whole thing in the 60's and put up all the concrete that is there now although recently refurbished. I lived in Napier Avenue, and the arcade was a great place to explore. The smells of ham, bacon, cheese, tea (sold loose) in tea chests were wonderful. There was a great sweet shop in there, and another shop that would sell you broken biscuits. And also later Bobins book shop.

I remember Bobins book shop well.Spent many book tokens and a lot of time browsing there.

It pains me that they pull down great buildings and we end with monstrosity's like that yellow dominoe set they have just built in town or worse still vic ave and the delights of the civic centre and the old social security building and college.

Have to say we do forget how many great Victorian and Edwardian buildings Southend had , a shame this has now gone , Hope teh Museum stays around . Also the Tudor influence .
