The Business
Had a debate with the lads last night and I would value some intelligent feedback. My mate went to a buffett style place at lunch with a few work mates. Bit of a non-story really but then he said he tipped the bloke £3.

I asked what for as its a buffett place it is self service anyway. He said as you "have to tip waiters". I asked why and he said they get sh!t money so its up to us to make up the difference.

I am morally opposed to tipping. For my mind you get a set wage for you job and if you dont like that wage then get another job.

I also hate the double standard eg You tip a taxi driver who is charging you an extorionate rate for a lift yet you dont tip a bus driver who is getting you there as cheaply and efficently as possible.

Personally I dont buy this exeptional service b******s either. You should give exceptional service at all times hence why you are a waiter.

Only person i tip is my hairdresser as it makes sense to as you want to keep her sweet for a good cut next time.

Just to make it clear its not that I am tight I just dont think tipping is right.

Thoughts please.....

Tipping at a Buffet? Thats b******s..

I tip when i get a decent service and feel as if the waiter/waitress deserves a tip. The people that simply take your order, give you your food and then get the bill when you ask them to don't deserve a tip in my book, Whereas people who do the above, ask you how your food is, if you would like anything else etc deserve a tip for providing a good service on a low rate of pay.

Now people that add the service charge without your permission, Thats b******s as well

I've been to the states a few times where Tipping may as well be a law, but for that i never recieved any problems at restaurants and the service is great... Still doesn't make up for the fact you're being forced to tip though.

Depends on the service. If you've been treated well and had a nice meal I'd be happy to tip. What does **** me off is the compulsory 10% charge that some London restaurants decide is right.

As I know London like the back of my hand (and spent 3 months cabbing some years back), I'll only tip a cabbie if they haven't taken the ****, and plenty of them do.

I never tip in a restaurant with a service charge.

I've had a meal where the host refused to pay the service charge at the end given that the service was appalling.

good points here

I was out for dinner last night with t'wife and in-laws and we had a debate about this.
They had added the 12.5% service charge to the bill but Ma-In-Law insisted on giving the waiter an extra tenner ' cos he was nice'.
Suffice to say debate turned into an argument

and as I'm off to the States on Monday I'm sure I'll be tipping like crazy as it's expected that you tip between 10 & 15 %..........

I went to a bar in San Franciso once (Not looking great I know with me living in Brighton but I have a mate live out there so 3 of us went) and it said on the side Budweiser was $2.50 inc tax.

I gave the bloke $10 for four beers and he said "Wheres the tip"

I had approched the bar and literally the bar men had to turn round and get the bottles out the fridge and take the lid off and he wanted a tip.....I said F Off and he said Ok fine and took the beers back. Knob.

Tipping is so customary in America that in some casinos in the US croupiers don’t get paid and actually have to pay the casino to work there as the tips are so large!

I always tend to tip.  At the end of the day, waiting staff get sh*te pay, so it's only fair to give them a tip.  MtS's tipping points...

1. Always tip in cash, never tip on a card.  If you tip on a card, the restaurant is fully within its rights to withhold that money as restaurant profit and not give it to the waiters.  If you give it as cash, it belongs to the waiters.  Believe it or not, there's a European Court of Justice decision on this issue...!

2. The size of the tip depends on the quality of the service.  Sh*t service - c. 7%.  Adequate service - 10%.  Good service - 12.5%.  Excellent service - 15%.

3. In France, the service charge on your bill is compulsory by law, and if you don't pay you can be arrested.  In contrast, the service charge in England is an extremely grey area of law.  On at least one occasion, when I suffered mind-bogglingly awful service in a restaurant in London, I told the waiter I was refusing to pay the service charge.  The waiter promptly started to argue the toss, in keeping with the shambolic performance all evening.  Barely keeping a lid on my rage, I bawled at the waiter to bring the manager immediately as I refused to deal with him any longer.  I then tore a very large strip off the manager, detailing the litany of incompetence which our table had suffered.  The manager not only waived the service charge in its entirety, but took a further £25 off the bill.  In short, if a restaurant slaps a service charge on you, only pay it if you get service.  Oh, and as a result, I never leave a tip in such restaurants.

4. DtS - in the States, you pay tips.  Everywhere.  The "When in Rome..." rule applies.  Pay tips.  To everyone.  And pay 15%-20% (the latter only for excpetional service).  If you pay 10% you'll get sh*t service because you'll be seen as a tight-***.  That's the deal.

5. If you don't like it, go to Japan.  The Japanese consider tipping to be offensive.  You never pay tips anywhere, since it is their honour and privilege to be serving you as their customer.  And believe me, nothing in the world comes close to the quality and care of Japanese customer service... it is almost embarrasingly good.  As a Brit, you stand there and feel all all awkward  at how well you get treated!  Believe me, when the pretty lady in the Takashiyama department store in Tokyo not only presses the floor button in the lift of the floor you want to get to, but then steps out of the lift and bows at you when the doors close, you know  you're getting good service.

The norm in Spain: tip if you've had food served to your table; don't tip if it's a buffet or you've had just drinks. Also, according to the locals, tip more than about 8% and you might as well scratch "TOURIST" on your forehead.

Hmmmmm, given the numerous things that pass as fully acceptable out there I'm wondering whether this advice is relevant

I tend to tip over here because you can do it to your discretion. I had enough similar experiences to DtS in Whistler to last a lifetime. THe worst one was when we went in to a bar, ordered from the bar and as the bird gave my mate his change back she then proceeded to bang the tip jar on the counter because "you British tend to forget". Couldn't believe her cheek!

Not to be outdone in the cheekiness states, we ostentatiously had a whip round to see if anyone's got any 'little' coins and put about 40 cents in between us. Needless to say that there was plenty of "we don't understand how much too tip because we're British" banter. Even less need to add that they weren't even liekly to serve us again so that was the only pint we ever had in that place. If anyone's ever going to Whistler, let me know and I'll name and shame the place in the same way that all nine of us in our house did while working for the next six months!

I don't like tipping taxi drivers - they charge extortionate fees and I'll avoid them if at all possible.

Always tip in restaurants though, normally just over ten per cent if they've done an average to good job. I'm aware of the low money some of the staff get and how busy it can be so I appreciate it.

Service charges are wrong - it should be up to you to judge the quality of service, not them.

Thing that annoys me - If I buy a pram of the bloke in the pram shop and he gives me half an hours attention to make sure that its the right pram for little DtS then I wouldn't be expected to tip him and yet he is making a bg difference to my life.

Yet some spotty oik serves me my food in and asked me if the meal is ok and expects 10% of the bill...

WRONG

Well isn't that shocking news.....
