Transfer News, Gossip & Speculation Transfer Thread - Summer 2025 Edition.

Transfer news
Alan Devonshire deserves some credit here. He certainly has the ability to spot potential in a player. In recent years on a ridiculously small budget, Devonshire has signed other club's cast-offs and made them much better players. Would not surprise me if McCoulsky does well at Harrogate.
Let's not forget he improved Acquah and got him a move to FL Barrow too. He's also done well with Abrahams too.

He certainly gets the best out of the goods provided.

If COSU had needed season ticket money to get through the close season they would have been on sale a while back. Clearly, they don't and there is no need for an early bird offer either. That's not to say there won't be one though.
STM frees up othr money to be used on other important matters such as the rebuild off RH also targets etc ,STM is vitally important for the future of the club. Your down playing its importance i dont understand sorry .

reading Sam Colyers post , think i would love to have both Franchetti and Brookes if possible Our defence at present is not good enough ,we conceded 8 goals in the 3 finals not promotion winning form im sad to say, Im sure Spasov would have been look at also maybe he already a target, A small fee plus a preseason friendly at Slough can push that one through. In fact i would say all of His recommendations seemed vert sensible .

Based on our post January form we have already have a player group that should at least guarantee us a place in the top five. We have a decent nucleus and they will be strengthened by some close season signings. It will be interesting to see where they come from. No one on this thread talks much about LCP...we plucked him out of almost nowhere (apologies to Slough Town supporters) and yet he oozed class from the get go and he will be a key member of the squad in the coming season. One or more of those might make us a serious side!
It might be LCP is something of a one off and the incoming we see will be solid rather than spectacular. Under KM/JS our recruitment has been shrewd and with them at last having the close season to work in our squad is bound to be strengthened (and I am guessing at little cost).
A word about some players: to Bonne or not to Bonne? This may depend on whether they already have a replacement lined up or not. If an improvement on him can be signed he will be gone but the cost of retaining him might also be factor. As with all older players he would be a very good signing at a certain wage while a poor one at higher wages.
I am in a minority but believe Hayes to be vastly underrated. When Fondop was clean through in the final he forced into missing by Hayes speed off the line and the way he shut down the angles....in the end Fondop had little to aim at and was forced into missing.it was a super save even though the keeper never touched touched the ball. He is young for a goal keeper & must have potential for further improvement & it will be interesting to see if the management team agree with me or not.
I am really looking forward to seeing what signings materialise especially as I suspect more than one will catch us all by surprise...perhaps 20 plus goal a season left back to go with our 17 goal right back? That will then remove the need for a 'proven goalscorer'! (that species while not quite extinct is rare enough to be out of our price range).
Exciting times lie ahead which is something that for a while I did not think I would ever live long enough to see. I am looking forward to a number of surprises and all of them pleasant!

Come on guys be realistic. As much as I would like it there is no chance we get Jimi Gower. He is far too good and has recently been on the Arsenal bench numerous times inc away at the Bernabeu. Can see him going to a Championship club at work.

Can we also give new suggestions rather than also just recirculating players that we have had previously. It is so boring.
So why didn’t Arsenal sell him instead of release him?

That doesnt change anything. Maybe he wanted to move on, maybe they have other plans. That doesnt mean he will drop 5 levels. He will get tons of offers much higher up the pyramid than us.
I'm sure he'll be getting a lot of good advice from Mark. If I were advising a young player released from a premiership club at the moment, I'd probably be encouraging them to move abroad for a few years, Netherlands, Germany, Portugal or Spain. And of course Mark has a lot of European club contacts.

Not sure Hartlepool are going to pull themselves together in the first half of the season with Raj doing a Martin and trying to be as disruptive as ever before he goes.

Here's the transfer bit, on the manager front though:

With Limbrick still in place (!) it is now in the public domain that they have had an offer to Coughlan turned down by Boston.

Shocking way to go about business, but again it's one person not the club or fans.

If I was Limbrick, I'd be putting pen to paper on my resignation letter this morning!

we missed out on promotion by a fluke 10 minutes from the end. clearly we need to rip it all up and start again. and the owners need to put loads of money in, but can't charge any more for season tickets.

one big thing for me is we need a left footer on the left. Bridge is too isolated out there since Wes left, so we need an alternative. Leon for me can play that Wes role, imagine him and Bridge inter-changing with Ralph on the overlap. Moist.

but the thing is what it has been all season. there's not enough goals in the team. buy em, coach em, promote em from the youth, whatever you need to do, get us some goals up top.

and we need a centre centre back. and that decision is beyond massive. he needs to be good in the air, a leader, mobile, quick enough, score a few goals, bring the ball out from the back, pass well, and be good defensively. and affordable to a 5th tier team. ideally two, in case one gets injured. that's asking a lot
The flip side of that opening statement is this.

We only made the play offs due to the monumental collapse of Gateshead and crazy comebacks in both play off away games. Something we failed to do in the league all season.

We also made the 7th spot by scoring fewest goals and points.

If we want to gain automatic promotion then we must make up at least another 30 odd points.

That's a better, tighter defence and several players scoring 10-15+ goals and not relying on a right wing back.

I think posts stating we were 10 minutes from promotion (whilst accurate in the sense of how the play-offs work) underplay the reality that we finished seventh and in the final play-off place, whilst those that suggest we snuck in due to the loss of form of other teams and were 34 points from champions Barnet and therefore we require sweeping changes underplay the reality that we had already made drastic improvements in the second half of the campaign once additions were made to the squad and acquisitions bedded in.

Over the course of that second half of the season, we were third in the form table; 13 points behind Barnet in those 23 games, but only 7 behind York City (so 14 points to make up on the best team remaining in the division if that's projected over a full season) and that, to me, points to evolutionary changes to the squad rather than revolutionary.

100% this, it's 4-5 additions (and hopefully keeping key players) rather than a complete re-build. I expect COSU to back the football department in player recruitment and, for once, the club should be a pretty attractive proposition to a lot of players. COSU and us as fans can pass judgement on Maher's abilities next season accordingly, with the club not being a basket-case for the first time in a decade.

One thing I hope the recruiting team improve on is their signing of goalkeepers. IMO this has been pretty awful. Hayes, Blondy, Harness and Jeacock.
Collin is at the club because of a recommendation by Steve Tilson. Hopefully he will resume as number one next season.
I don't anticipate goalkeeper changes this summer with Collin and Hayes both under contract but I do prefer Collin too. If either were to move on Joe McDonnell is available and despite a few uncharacteristic errors last season has been a dependable keeper at this level for a long time.
