I think Webby had the best idea, sticking forwards on the wings rather than centre-midfielders. Bit more attacking. But of course this left us massively vulnerable.

Webby use to stick a forward on the wing.

On the other wing to Ansah, Tilly was someone who could easily (and on occasions did) play centre-mid.

I think Ansah's pace is possibly something this team lacks.

Last night's team also lacked the aerial ability of both Angell and Benjamin. It was their ability to hold up play which allowed us to commit men forward. We didn't have that last night.

If we hadnt spent so much money and had so many new and individually decent players in this season, following 2 years of fighting for our financial survival fans expectations would have been much lower. I expected mid-table preseason. With the amount of tinkering Sturrock had been able to do in comparison to at least 18 teams in the division (possibly more) it is clear that the board either expect (or more likely have rashly gambled on) promotion.

That activity has raised fans expectations. Compare that to life under Alan Little where we really did have journeymen, no ambition and definitely no funds. Fans did not EXPECT promotion or were as critical as we currently are. Vocal, passionate and whingeing after a defeat with a large slice of realism.

Both Tolson and Tinkler were on big money under Little.

I was thinking more Webb III, with Rawle and Bramble on the wings.

We will deserve promotion if we finish above 21 other teams, or manage to win the play-offs. The fans attitude has nothing to do with it. But I agree, the negativity of some fans also annoys me, but they pay the same money as I do to air their opinions as they see fit.

succinctly put.

The support last night was actually ok ..considering.
I do not agree with getting on the player's backs and last night that did not happen.

Having said that. Football is not a cheap entertainment these days and I have to say the following:

Over many, many years of going to Roots Hall we have had worse teams, much worse...but never such awful, dull, lethargic performances as have been witnessed at home in the last few weeks. Truly appalling stuff.
The really poor sides we have had in the past, have often given it a go..but been beaten. Of late, this far superior squad has bored and frustrated the paying customer.

Is expensive to watch the current quality.

It loathes me to write this.

All correctly said. I'm hardly a floating supporter. Have been going for donkey's years, until this term was a season ticket holder and when we got relegated last time I was at every home match. But the cost (£65 a trip for me), the attitude of the club (which is ashamedly pitiful) and the crap footie are putting me off. Just didn't bother last night, seem to have lost the spark of excitement that always made me wanna go to Roots Hall whatever was happening. It used to be that when I did not go I felt awful, now when I abstain (still going to at least 50%, but not the last three) I just feel relieved, and richer.

Hall has alot of pace and has the freedom to roam as for aerial ability that man was dickenson before he got injured. We have missed Bilel aerial threat since he not been around. I can see him coming in from the cold saturday

The one constant in this thread is that the current style of play is boring supoporters at Roots Hall. If we get promotion..fine.
If we are NOT promoted, I think crowds will dip well below 4,000 next season as many will not pay current prices to see absolutely no goalmouth incident created by Southend United.

It seems ridiculous to complain when still 4th and in with a shout. The problem is, I had more excitement watching the text on the BBC from Malta - honestly!!

I think its more than stated. Yes its boring but thats not the whole problem. Its boring and fans do not believe it will deliver promotion. If the supporters had faith that we would be in league 1 next season and playing a more aesthetic style, then there would be less complaint about the tactics used to get us to the promised land. Very few supporters really believed the tactics employed would keep us in the top three, even when on an unbeaten run, and now the points tally is ticking over more slowly the lack of faith has turned to a crescendo of ' I knew I was right'. Success forgives, failure condemns.
