Oxford makes most sense Smiffy, as they are one of the few clubs that are (a) local enough to entice people (b) big enough to cope with a large travelling support (c) probably willing to co-operate, ala their recent "Ultimate Yellows" day v Bristol Rovers (near on 9300 in attendance)

EDIT: Just noticed when Oxford is

And for those that think that away support is a modern thing how about this from 1923-24:

F.A.Cup 5th Round Qualifying Round
Clapton 1-3 Southend United

Clapton were an established club since 1878 but only semi professional and played at the “Old Spotted Dog Ground” in Forest Gate, but this game was played at West Ham United. The West ham pitch, was in a very poor state, not helped by the fact that a Boys match had been played on it in the morning, both goalmouths were quagmires. “One appreciates all the more what a good ground the Kursaal enclosure is in all weathers when one finds the West ham pitch almost a sea of mud” stated the Standard. Two goals by Billy Goodwin and after a brilliant “dash” by George Johnson, and another by George Davies were enough to beat the Red and White stripes of Clapton. When it was found that the Blues were destined to meet Clapton away from home in the fifth round, it was contemplated as a poor draw, for on their form against kings Lynn there was a possibility of their being beaten and a match at the Spotted Dog could only prove a heavy financial loss. As events turned out with the tie decided up at west Ham’s ground at Boleyn Castle, it probably proved as ruminative as if it had been staged at the Kursaal. There was a surprisingly good gate of about 16,000 people. Few clubs probably have such a loyal band of supporters as Southend and it was really amazing to see the number of local people present. In addition to train loads carried by the L.M. & S.R. Company hundreds journeyed down from the City and a low estimate of the Southend contingent was 4,000. Over 1,100 booked from Southend alone and it is estimated that the excursions carried 2,000. I noticed members of the Southend Corporation present representatives of the local medical profession and leaders of nearly every phase of life in the Borough. There were the horrid rattles, and in one instance I heard of a railway station bell having been borrowed for the afternoon. One party had a big black cat mascot There was no doubting the enthusiasm of people and in the moment of victory they forgot the Kings Lynn fiasco. They made much noise however the United’s supporters were greatly outnumbered for the vast majority of the crowd was distinctly hostile to Southend and would dearly have loved to see the amateurs succeed.

How many did we take to the 2003-2004 LDV Final v Blackpool?

It would probably be better for a more local one that most people can get to.

Agreed.

But if you look at the fixtures thats a bit difficult.

The only local ish ones are:

Daggers - we'll sell that out easily anyway
AFC Wombles - NY Eve, difficult and small away end
Northampton - Not that far and we can get 1,200 allocation...
Gills - Valentines day, Tues night. Open air. Nope.
Oxford - Last away game We'll pack it out if we still in contention anyway.

For me the only local ish one that is viable is Northampton. Or we go further afield and really make the effort. Cheltenham, Shrewsbury, Bristol, Burton, Hereford?

Alternatively we earmark an FA Cup game? 1st round maybe a bit too soon to arrange...

Yes, remember it well, (David Crown sealing promotion) don't know the numbers of our following though.
The longest nail biting second 45 mins I've ever enjured! From being comfortable at half time 2.0 up they pulled one back early second half and from that moment on it was all hands to the pumps. I like to think the tremendous vocal support helped pull the boys through and allowed us to go up automatically. Anything other than a win and we would have been in the playoffs where I trully don't feel we would have been susscessful, as we were in a dip in form while others were peaking.

Aha mine was spot on then, as it was the most league away attendance. I wonder what the fewest we have ever taken and where (bound to be somewhere oop north)

I was one of 12 at Hartlepool one year, the guy who used to post as Captain Birdseye is said to have been the only one at Port Vale one season but this has not been confirmed

Subsidised travel would really help - reckon Tara will dig deep?

Lowest away following guys? 115 at Hartlepool??

The lowest I have been to was probably at Exeter on the 1st Oct 1986 it was a Weds night & no supporters coach running so went on the train. Only 14 Southend fans & a couple of those lived near Exeter anway!

There was loads of matches in the mid 1980's when no coaches were running to away games so easily less than 100 of us at some grounds. Mind you home average crowds were only about 1,800 for one season in the 1980's so in comparison as many travel now as then, if you see what I mean.

Again I know it's not in the last 6 years but the 1,000 we took to Blackpool in October 2000 for David Webbs return was a pretty good effort.

Just showing my age I'm afraid . However, Liverpool away FA Cup 3rd Round Replay in 1979 or 1980. Have a feeling that despite a petrol shortage and a harsh winter 6000 plus went to Anfield on a Wednesday night. I remember it seemed to take an age to find the right coach in Stanley Park after the game.

All this talk of away attendances has got me thinking that we should arrange one away game a season, where we all make the effort to get to it. We set a target following and all do our best to plug it. We'll make it a party atmosphere as well and provide the things to do so.

I'll have a think and come up with something...

But at the moment I'm thinking Cheltenham on Sat Dec 10th or perhaps Northampton on Sat 14th Jan?

Last game of the season against Oxford away which is a Fancy Dress Day for those attending maybe come up with a theme for the day a simple costume just a idea all dressed the same just a few ideas: where's wally - smurfs - just a couple of ideas that could be extended on should the idea be taken up
