Kevin Maher Southend United’s Manager

Kevin Maher says he wants to do well in the Emirates FA Cup and put Blues’ recent struggles in the competition to one side, as we prepare to take on Yeovil Town in the fourth qualifying round.

Having only won two FA Cup matches since the start of 2014/15, a good recent run in the league presents an opportunity to move into the first round proper this time around.

Maher said: “We’d love to do well in it, we want to get through this round and see where it takes us because the rewards can be good. It hasn’t been that kind to us in recent years and it’s a tough draw away from home.

“Yeovil are doing ever so well and we know we’ve got to perform. They’re in a different place to when we went there last year and they’ve got some continuity with the manager.”

The Glovers have former Blues Jake Hyde and Rhys Murphy in their ranks, who were remarkably the two goalscorers on our last visit to Huish Park.

On them, Maher added: “They’re both great lads. I’m glad to see Murph’s scoring goals and Hydey’s off the mark as well so I’m really pleased for them and it’ll be good to see them.”

Blues have finally had a week without a Tuesday night game and have been able to recover after seven games in 22 days, which we finished with a superb 2-0 win away at Woking.

“We’re managing rest, recovery and training properly as well. In that respect it’s been a good week to have a bit of a break from games and I think everyone else in the league would say the same thing."

“We didn’t give up too many chances against Woking and the overall performance was very good. It was an important performance off the back of the Tuesday before as well, so we were pleased with that but it was put to bed early this week.”

Maher was able to add a couple of new faces to the squad before that game, and spoke well on both Daniel Kanu and Nick Hayes this afternoon.

“Dan came on and got a good few minutes. He showed he’s willing to run in behind and his work ethic without the ball is ever so good as well. That’ll endear him to the players and the fans and he knows where the goal is too.

“Nick came in late, which was difficult for everyone, but he was composed in everything he did and he carried himself really well.”

Despite those additions, the gaffer will once again be struggling to name a matchday squad because of injuries and players that are cup tied.

“Maz [Mauro Vilhete] and Brooklyn [Kabongolo] have already played in the FA Cup so they’ll be unavailable.

“Wes has done some training this week so hopefully he’ll be available. Collin’s still out and Ralphy hasn’t trained this week either, so we’re very doubtful on him. Mooney’s a doubt as well and Lomas is still a way off.

In addition, Noor Husin is on international duty with Afghanistan. Maher concluded: “It’s a near impossible task that we’ve got to somehow find a way to get a team on the pitch.”

Southend United boss Kevin Maher

Southend United boss Kevin Maher is facing a ‘near impossible’ task picking a team for Saturday's FA Cup clash at Yeovil Town.

The Shrimpers boss currently has just 12 players available for the fourth round qualifying tie at Huish Park.

And Maher admits the latest selection headache is far from ideal

“We’re only allowed what we’re allowed and it was a struggle to get Nick Hayes in last week to play in goal at Woking,” said Maher.

“Trying to replace one for one when they’re only missing a game is difficult and probably wouldn’t be allowed.

“It’s a huge headache and a near impossible task but we’ve somehow got to find a way to get a team on the pitch.

Defender Brooklyn Kabongolo and midfielder Mauro Vilhete are both cup tied for Saturday’s match while midfielder Noor Husin is away on international duty with Afghanistan.

Defenders Nathan Ralph (ankle) and Louis Lomas (groin) are both still sidelined while midfielder Dan Mooney has yet to resume training after suffering a thigh injury.

Striker Callum Powell (knee) remains a long-term absentee while goalkeepers David Martin (hamstring) and Collin Andeng Ndi (ankle) are also unavailable.

Shot-stopper Hayes has been given permission to play by his parent club Ipswich Town but Blues remain in talks with Charlton Athletic as to whether or not on loan striker Daniel Kanu can feature.

The Shrimpers are also seeking clarification on if players from the under 19 side can be added to the squad.

And it is tough going for Maher.

“Ralphy (Nathan Ralph) hasn’t trained so he’s very doubtful, Mooney's not trained much either so he’s another one who is a doubt and Lomas is still a way off,” said Maher.

“He’s not been training at all.”

But Maher still remains eager to progress.

“Any team at our level or below you just try to get through the next round and see where it takes you,” said the Blues boss.

“The rewards can be good if you get through and everyone will be thinking that.

“We’re presented with a really tough game.

“It’s a tough ask away from home, another long journey and we’ve got to try and produce another result with a threadbare squad but we’ll do our best whoever plays.”

Big Preview

Yeovil Town v Southend United FA Cup 1st Round (Qualifying)

Big Preview.jpeg

Overview

Kevin Maher’s men make their first foray of the season into cup action on Saturday as we look to progress to the first round proper of the Emirates FA Cup.

This competition certainly hasn’t been a happy hunting ground in recent years, with our only wins since the start of the 2014/15 season coming against Crawley Town and Chertsey Town.

Blues have been handed a tricky tie away at Yeovil Town, with a long journey added to the equation, but having avoided defeat in four consecutive league games, winning the last two of those, spirits are high as we look to put an end to the poor FA Cup record.

If the match ends in a draw, a replay will take place at Roots Hall on Tuesday, 17 October at 7:45pm.

THE OPPOSITION

Yeovil have something of a reputation as FA Cup giantkillers, going all the way back to 1948/49 when the Glovers upset Sunderland in the fourth round, having come through from the qualifiers that season. They eventually lost to Manchester United.

The Somerset club reached the third round in four seasons out of seven around the turn of millennium, playing Liverpool in 2003/04, and have had two more meetings with Manchester United since then, as well as a clash with AFC Bournemouth just three seasons ago.

Their league fortunes have suffered in recent years, dropping from the Championship in 2013/14 to the National League South where they now find themselves.

Four seasons in the National League were ended last term after a 22nd-place finish saw the Glovers drop into the sixth tier, but a good start to the current campaign has fans expecting an immediate bounce back.

Jake Hyde and Rhys Murphy both joined Yeovil from Blues over the summer, meaning boss Mark Cooper has three former Southend men in his ranks, the other being Frank Nouble.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Overall, the two sides have met on 22 occasions, with 11 wins for Yeovil, eight for Southend, and three draws.

Blues’ biggest win over Saturday’s opponents came in the 2005/05 season. Luke Guttridge, Wayne Gray and Freddy Eastwood were on the scoresheet in a 4-1 triumph.

We did the double last season. Hyde scored in both games, netting the winner in a 1-0 win at Roots Hall and also opening the scoring in Somerset, where Murphy sealed the three points.

FROM THE GAFFER

Maher’s been pleased to have a full week of training: “We’re managing rest and recovery and training properly as well.

“In that respect it’s been a good week to have a bit of a break from games and I think everyone else in the league would say the same thing.

“Yeovil are doing ever so well and we know we’ve got to perform. They’re in a different place to when we went there last year and they’ve got some continuity with the manager.”

TEAM NEWS

Mauro Vilhete and Brooklyn Kabongolo are both cup tied. Maher is waiting to hear whether Daniel Kanu will be allowed to play by parent club Charlton Athletic.

Noor Husin is on international duty with Afghanistan, and Collin Andeng Ndi and Louis Lomas are definitely out. Nathan Ralph, Dan Mooney and David Martin are doubts.

His assistants are Antony Smith and Ryan Saward, and the fourth official is Paul Barber.

Come On You Shrimpers!

Two changes as Mooney and Fonguck return!

Gus captains the side for the first time, while there's a place on the bench for academy players Ronnie Blake and Beau MacDonald.

I think we will miss Miley and Husin big time, hoping for a positive result and I think we will need to be lucky today.

Didn't Miley get his 5th yellow card last game, would that mean he is suspended for today?

A big thank you then to Ipswich for being more supportive about Hayes, though I understand from a Tractor Boys fan friend that he's nowhere near their 1st team at the moment.

I'd happily take a draw. Miley and Husin missing is a huge blow. God I hope we are coming to the end of this sorry state of affairs.
