This is obviously hypothetical; every team could P46, W23, D0, L23, PTS 69. Therefore 70 points will ensure non-relegation!

Edit - Andy beat me to it!

How do you get 70 points if everyone else gets 69? It's not possible.

Way to late for maths!!!... I'm crap at maths, but even I can do this without a calculator.

It's completely hypothetical of course, but i'm guessing for example, the ideology would be:

Basically.......There are 46 games in a season (with 23 opponents).
For example, If every team in the league won at home 1-0 but lost away 1-0 (or vice versa) obviously all teams would have the same goal difference etc. All teams would end up with 69 points (23 X 3 = 69).

Therefore, in RobM's case study, if say Two teams involved in a league produced the only draw of the season, they would end up with 70 points. Thus surviving relegation, and also gaining automatic promotion at the same time!.

Surely one is at home therefore wouldn't get to 70 points... the would have 66+1 = 68. The other would have 70.

LOL. I take my hat off to you! (perhaps I do really need a calculator!).

Is that correct? a draw would mean two team's after a draw with 67 yet the other's would still have 69 points? My brain is melting!

I basically blame my parents!.. back in the mid 80's I wanted one of those classy Casio Calculator wrist watches, but i got "jazz" the transformer instead!... and to make matters worse, my older brother sat on it & broke it on Christmas day!...
Still to this day, I don't think I haven't cried so much, since seeing Richard Cadette leaving us, & I saw him wearing a bloody Brentford Shirt!

However, it's all in the past now, & we are finally talking again after so many years, (my brother... Not Richard cadette!... some things are un-forgivable!)

But you have a very good point!!..

In my defense, I did say earlier that I was crap at maths!!.. and if you want a true mathematician (as luck would have it), I've just received an email from a long lost Nigerian cousin of mine that is more than happy to do your tax returns for free!.. yes free!.. And they say "Blood is thicker than water.... what a blessing!?"..

Just send him your bank account details, and he will do the rest.

remember... the away team always loses. So the team that draws that game away gets an extra point. Ergo 70. The team that drew at home is relegated

One simple fact.

If we go unbeaten drawing 2 of the next 9 games then as long as one of those draws is in the last two games we will be at Wembley.

Let's hope the players are more focussed on Oldham than some of the fans (me) are!

I love your positive news!.. and so called "simple fact"

But equally we might lose them all as well!! (remember last season??)

Besides, It's all "here say"! ( It's not the all about a pop band from the turn of the millennium!) I know your a fan of such things!. But in this case they are all Southend United related.

Anyway, back to the football in hand, instead of 90's pop group porn,... I predict a difficult 1-0 win V Oldham and a loss or draw to Bolton, and as my old man would say... "it's brown trouser time"

Lets just hope results go our way!

This is, and has been SUFC for the decades I have followed them for.......unpredictable.

We have, as I have stated somewhere, got a squad the likes I have not seen for many a year, capable of winning promotion, IF they perform to their capabilities, and with a little tinkering, staying in the Championship, and then who knows...when the sustainability comes from the new cash revenue streams from Fossetts............sorry I got a tad carried away at the end there!

I'm a real fan of what this team and Brown have achieved with some of the best football I've seen here in years , but I still think realistically we will need a fairly large overhaul to compete in the championship - over to you Ron !

No they wouldn't. One team would have to draw at home, thus losing 2 points. Moreover, if EVERY other team gets 69 points from winning all their home games no-one can draw a game at all.

It might be hypothetical, but it's complete nonsense because the maths doesn't work.

'Magnum' has it.

A final table of all wins except one, would read :-

1 team on 70
22 teams on 69
1 team on 67

Total points = 1655

There are 552 games in a season (46 rounds of matches x 12 matches per round) = 552

551 games with 3 points gained is 1653 plus 1 game with 2 points gained = 1655

Therefore, you would need 70 points to guarantee not being relegated.

Interesting games during the week, including ours of course :-

Tuesday :

Rochdale v Port Vale
Shrewsbury Town v Millwall

Wednesday :

Oxford United v Fleetwood Town

Four home wins would be good! I don't think Rochdale are in the chase now.
