Very contradictory post, making it sound like we should have expected to lose to a team which finished 4 places and 11 points behind us, and so were weaker over the course of the season...

Not contradictory. What it suggests is that we did fantastically to amass 83 points - a total that I suggests is above what could be expected from this group of players. But what it also acknowledges is that Crewe are a fantastic model of a lower league team, with consistency and excellency in the youth teams. This doesn't always translate into on-field success, and their first-half of a season is testament to that. But there are few League 2 sides who could cope with their pressing, agility, skill and finishing over two ties at the end of the season. Unfortunately we weren't one of them, but we'll be back, hopefully under Sturrock, fighting for promotion next year.

Yep must be terribly wrong to get 83 points. Get that next season and we will probably get promoted.

I am certainly not for getting rid of Sturrock, what I am for is for him to continue to improve this team and to keep playing the style that we have recently at home.

If when Dickinson is back we revert to 4 5 1 and simply playing "direct passes" I too will be questioning him. It worked for a while, but got found out.

All will depend on the players we keep and lose.

If we can keep Eastwood/Hall/Grant and also bring in a central midfielder who can actually pass the ball we can hopefully be successfull and more entertaining.

Spot on mate, completely agree with you

Very harsh, the players should take the brunt of the blame not Luggy. Timlin missed 2 sitters on saturday, Mohsni heading it at the keeper when it seemed easier to score tonight. Hall was very well marshalled, Eastwood too. Give some credit to Crewe, they are on a great run and executed their plan well, particuarly in the first half of both games. Dont forget 83 points wouldve got us promotion most seasons automatically. Im quite happy with Luggy as boss next season but we must go and buy that bit of extra quality at centre back and up top to score the goals. I also thought Timlin was very disappointing over the 2 games and maybe I would look at another centre mid to partner Grant if he stays.

Can't help bit feel haunted by aldershot and Bradford doing the double over us
lose some dead weight and bring in fred and some others who can play football
sacking ps is wrong IMO

Just finished watching the match on Sky. Second half we showed what we can do but too late because yet again sturrock got the first half tactics horribly wrong. I have had enough of him and his mistakes. Senior, experienced manager? Go now sturrock, dont look back, dont prolong it. Lets get a man in who can let players play. Gutted for the team. Gutted.

To be honest I think you can do one pal, sums it up that you watched on sky! :S
Good effort...

That's where we differ. I don't think 83 points is above these players. It's above the manager's tactics and style but not the players themselves. Anyone who has some knowledge about League 2 and its teams and players will know that we have a very strong squad on paper for this level, stronger man-for-man than all bar Swindon I'd have said, and 83 points is less than they could have achieved. Unfortunately the team is not quite the sum of all its individual parts.

Sturrock so far i feel has done a brilliant job. Yeah we didn't get promotion but he has turned the club around and to be honest i can't think of any other managers that we could of hired would have done a better job that what Sturrock has done so far. And beside's i dont think it was a problem with tactics but a lack of confidence on the ball and lack of movement mainly in the first half. Looking back he could of started Harris instead of Benyon but Crewe were determined to get the edge and they did and i do not think Harris would have changed it. On the overall tie Crewe played the better football and deserved it so don't be so bitter in defeat and start Discussing about the manager because quite frankly he has done an excellent job so far.

All we can do now is get behind the team for next season and start all over again with a clean slate. UTB

Paul Sturrock has done an excellent job in assembling a decent squad.

Paul Sturrock is also the worst tactical manager I have known at Southend United in more than 40 years!

alright the "do one" bit might be an overreaction, but you cant honestly say you've been thrilled with this season.

I watch Southend through thick and thin and have done for 20 years. To get in the play-offs is a joy to behold at any point but it just wasn't to be this season...champions next season then

Surely the aim was promotion this season? Ultimately we have failed and by default there must be blame. Of course there are a combination of reasons however tonight there was a major tactical error by Sturrock which he must take the rap for (although the performances of most players in the first half was truly shocking).

Of course your right. I guess that in the past on the rare times we've been promoted it has been thoroughly enthralling and we have played enjoyable football like winners.

Anyway **** it. i'm not on here to argue with anyone, we are all Southend fans. i'm dissapointed and gutted, and awaiting next season. Such is life for a lower league fan...
