This is a heat of the moment reaction. Give Sturrock at least another season, fine-tune the squad in the summer, get Dickinson and Kalala (and maybe even Corr) back and we'll be strong contenders next season. It was Sturrock's tactical changes in the 2nd half that improved our performance. If that had been Tilson he probably would've left it until the 80th minute. We lost to a very talented team over two legs. We were extremely close to getting automatic promotion with a points total that would normally get you promotion.

I appreciate the level headed post, but would you be thrilled to see the same brand of football next year? i'm not fishing i'm interested to know.
In my whole life as a southend fan ive never left the hall having won and being top of the league feeling how I felt this year.

Our style of football has changed in the last 5 home games. Why is that not acknowledged ?

If we continue to play at home as we have done recently, Ill be far happier than I was during this season. I couldnt stand the thought of it if it was 4 5 1 or whatever for the whole of the season again though.

Completely ignores the fact we got enough points that would have got us the autos 9 times out of ten....

Yes I am ignoring that, because it wasn't enough this season and that's all that matters. Couldn't give a toss about what 83 points would have gotten us last season because this isn't last season. And as I said.....even if we'd gone up I'd still retain serious reservations about Sturrock.

In spite of, not because of. That best sums up our promotion challenge this year for me. Sturrock almost ****ed it up with the tactics but the players were luckily too good on paper to slip out of contention completely.

His style of football doesn't help his cause at all. I'll start the stupid cry's of bring Tilson back, but as we all know that's not gonna happen. If Luggy is willing to play football next season with Harris/benyon and Eastwood up front we can win this **** league. Another season of league 2 is **** and depressing, but other than Sir Steve, who else is there?? Luggy is the man, but he needs to change his thinking.

In my opinion...a tad harsh and blunt in the wording.
In fairness, Paul Sturrock assembled a squad more than good enough. Sadly, Paul Sturrock is the most dull, cautious and unambitious manager I have ever seen at Roots Hall and in the top 5 passion-killers I have ever known...and I have met a few!

You could argue thats purely because Dicko was out. But i concede that we have tried to play differently in the last few games. The blunt point being that it hasnt worked well enough to get us out of league two. So it hasnt been good enough. But yes if we went for a philosophy of trying to play like we did in the second half that would be better.

all yesterdays men .... got beaten by a team of vibrant young players - there was a time when we were the exciting ones....

I think at the start of the season everyone would have settled for 4th Place. But to snatch a play off place from the jaws of promotion was such a poor effort. As the Crewe fans sang "top of the league and you ****ed it up" -indeed they were 100% right

I don't need to grow up thanks, im stating my opinion, if you dont like it thats fine, but don't resort to insults.

No, of course that's fine and you should promote your opinions. But if a child states their opinion and its nonsense you tell them so. To sack a manager with as many promotions on their CV as Sturrock would be a childish reaction to disappointment. Especially a manager who has guided players to a near record number of points for their club, and who have been beaten to promotion by a club with an ethos, youth academy and product as admirable as Crewe's.

Let's not be stupid here. We call for Sturrock's head and want...what? We want a manager who plays football like Crewe, yeah? Well, that's not possible with our resources. The only reason they're as good as they are is that they have an academy like no other in the football league, and consistency that would make our knee-jerkers weep.

Man up, accept that we're a League 1/League 2 club and that it takes skill, management and a big slice of luck to get promoted.

Some people are so stupid. Sturrock doesn't need to go anywhere. He led the team to finish on 83 points, usually more then enough to gain automatic promotion. On another day, we may have gone up and every one would have been singing his praises.

The last thing we need now is to argue amongst ourselves. Yes it hurts and it has brought me to tears and you could blame PS tactics (however i thought his tactics were better today). we definatly still had chances e.g. eastwood and timlin hitting the post. If we would have scored them both then we would be on our way to wembly, so i dont think you can blame PS for this because the players still went out there and were sloppy with possession and kept giving it away and only came out of their shell with half an hour left. So i dont see how people can blame PS for this because i think it was a mixture between lack luster performances for part of the game and getting unlucky with the woodwork. Now is a time more than ever that we need to stay strong as a club and get through a summer of transition to hopefully be there or there abouts again next year (which i think will not happen because i feel we will lose players like hall etc and there are going to be some very good and competitive teams there next year).

Now because i have written so much i just want to sum this up and tell anyone who wants to start blaming PS to just calm down because you cant take anything away from crewe because they were good over both legs and i hope they go up because they are a club i admire and think deserve some success

Very contradictory post, making it sound like we should have expected to lose to a team which finished 4 places and 11 points behind us, and so were weaker over the course of the season...

man up?
We've been a league 1/league 2 side my whole life, its reality. i've seen all the **** and all the good like most on here.

It's my opinion that he's run his course. Even when we were top of the league a lot of people were'nt happy, and the football was grim. I've never experienced that in 20+ years of watching. It's not a knee jerk reaction, it's just the way I see things.

And for the record I will always commend PS for getting us out of the hell we were in a few seasons ago, he did a class job.

Like we were going to this season? We were top from end of October until early December. Should have run away with it and where are we now? Another season in the basement league.

Something has to be wrong somewhere that needs to change, otherwise we wont win the league next season either?

Yep must be terribly wrong to get 83 points. Get that next season and we will probably get promoted.

I am certainly not for getting rid of Sturrock, what I am for is for him to continue to improve this team and to keep playing the style that we have recently at home.

If when Dickinson is back we revert to 4 5 1 and simply playing "direct passes" I too will be questioning him. It worked for a while, but got found out.

All will depend on the players we keep and lose.

If we can keep Eastwood/Hall/Grant and also bring in a central midfielder who can actually pass the ball we can hopefully be successfull and more entertaining.
