Ok here we go again ... ok we are really gutted BUT I can you know we be more depressed if Paul Sturrock left the club

I believe we make sure we get a top 3 place next season the playoff been on the losing side is so awful just awful and I only watch it on TV

ONE TEAM IN ESSEX
SOUTHEND UNITED FC

I don't post on here that often these days - a good thing some may say - but I do wonder if some people actually want the best for our club at times.

It is a very emotive time given what happened tonight, but how on earth can anyone advocate sacking a manager who has just given us our highest points haul for many a year? Yes, we're all gutted about losing tonight, but we got beaten by the better team over the two legs - why does there then need to be a major overhaul because of it? We've gone from a club on the brink of imploding with only 3 senior players to a team who has amassed 83 points (enough to have got us promoted 5 out of the last 6 seasons and more than we got when we won League 1 I believe) in a very short space of time. All of which masterminded by PS.

How can sacking him, getting in someone new, and starting all over again possibly be of benefit? If we'd finished 18th, then yes, for sure, but for crying out loud, we've just narrowly lost a play off semi, which in truth, we could so easily have won with a bit of luck.

We have the nucleus of a really good squad here - a lot of which came here solely because of Sturrock.

If you want an example of why we should not do this, take Nottingham Forest.... Sack Billy Davies after losing in the play offs last season, and this season, only just managed to avoid relegation to League 1.... Do we want that here?

It's as if all the positive work he has done, and his extremely impressive CV, have been forgotten or ignored.

Some don't like his style of play? Well it can't be that bad... and as for negative.... Only Gillingham scored more goals than us this season!!!..... If that's negative, then I'll take that every day.

Yeah, we messed it up - from top of the league, we hit a major blip - it happens... it's happened to better teams than us, and sometimes, there is no explanation - loss of form, injury, suspension... I'm certain PS has made mistakes during that time - he always holds hid hands up when he does - but name a manager who hasn't? Should Man Utd sack Fergie because they managed to throw away an even better position than us this season?

And the best comment of the night, we almost got promoted in spite of Sturrock, not because of - That's cheered me up no end. 83 points over 46 games, the second highest scorers, a plus 30 goal difference, but that has nothing to do with Sturrock?..... If that's the case, then teams may as well dispense of managers altogether!!

I think a huge does of reality is needed here - When the dust has settled and everything is calm once again, surely people will see the massive strides forward we've taken this season, and if that continues, then promotion surely has to be a very real possibility next season.

I completely agree.

I think I'm out of here for a few days to let the dust settle. I personally think others should do the same on both sides.

What a totally brain dead post.

Are you seriously saying you wouldn't have taken 83 points at the start of the season?? It is Sturrock's tactics that got us there. He has done a sensational job, and I think it's crucial he stays.

Having thought long and hard about the whole Sturrock suitation I feel it may be time for him to move on. I will forever be grateful to him for keeping us up last season in the shocking position we were in, we were also so close to going up this season.

Its so such a hard one because he has got us more points than we've had in years without it even seeming us playing very well half the time, and getting our fair share of luck along the way. So many times he seems to have got the tactics wrong, I think we play very negative and counter attack a lot of the time, but with our players who can play football on the floor we wasted their talent.

We got beat by the better side last night and peoples feelings are all over the place (I know mine are) and we all feel so deflated. Maybe he deserves one more season, even he does get it then for me it will have to be his last if he doesn't get us up.

I'm meaning that PS was high profile as a manager rather than as a player. Moore and Whelan were much higher profile but as players and we were their first football league management positions.

I can't think of anyone who has had as much success and experience in the game as Sturrock has done as a manager who has then come to manage here.

Yes I gathered that was what you meant. But it's not exactly what you said.Often what you achieve as a player can condition what you achieve as a manager.Watch out for Barça's new manager's probable lack of success next season as a case in point(Tito who?).

Sturrock's successes have all been in the past.I doubt if he'll get another job in league football when he leaves our club.If the chairman is unwise enough to retain him, it's going to be a difficult summer and pre-season, unless some positive news comes along on the FF front. If we start badly next season then the home crowd will get on the team's back from the off and PS will be gone by Xmas.

Not sure a new manager would help much, PS built the squad based on the way he wants to play, and in the main its been effective this season. I doubt this group of players could suddenly start playing silky Tilson-esque football so any new manager would need a major squad refresh and I doubt we could really do that considering existing contracts etc. Personally I think he should get another year. Year one he saved us undoubtedly, year two the playoffs, year three automatic promotion. I think if he achieves that it could be considered a succesful 3-year turnaround which isn't bad considering where we were when he joined. However I would agree if we dont get in the top 3 next year it would be time for a change.

Also have to say, our shortcomings were brutally exposed by a very good young Crewe side. You can see why their youth system is so highly rated. They played with a confidence, maturity and skill that you don't often see in L2. I'll be surprised if they don't win the final and If they keep that side together it wouldnt surprise me to see them challenging at the top of L1 next year.

We just had the bad luck to come up against a very good in-form side who I think would make most L2 teams look slow and cumbersome. Hopefully they won't be around next year!

Sturrock is the best we can expect or afford realistically at our level and I think there is no-one on here who wouldn't have taken 83 points this season if offered at the start.

I knew we were never going to get past the first hurdle at the play-offs. By his own admission PS doesn't do knockout situations and the last day of the season at 5pm, I knew that we would still be in L2 next term. In fact more so knowing we had to play Crewe.

What did cost us automatic promotion was his being too slow to realize that the rest of the league had figured our route one football out by December/January time and he took til' March to bring some fresh tactics into the side. For that he does need to be criticised, but the fact he got us up there in the first place outweighs this error in judgement.

I think his time is up. His remit was clearly to get us out of this bloody awful league and he has failed to do that. I'd like to be able to say that watching Southend this season has been a pleasurable experience, but I can't. The Crewe fans got it right...'Top of the league, and we ****ed it up'.

Must echo the comments that bad style of play must be justified by results and we didn't get them. Don't particularly want sturrock out but It's clear for all to see that the football has to change with him or without because our lack of creativity and imagination cost us a promotion that was there for the taking. Gutted about tonight, lowest point I've experienced!

Lowest point?! Really??!! Can't of been going for very long then. If 83 points and a (buggered up) shot at the playoff's is a low point then I need to re-assess my take on life. A low point for me was watching Ronnie Whelan's squad of ****-artists and fat boys surrender our Championship status after challenging for a play-off place the previous season. Some people need a slap in the face and a wake-up call. I'm not a huge fan of Sturrock's style of play and the thought of another season at this level is making me feel very down indeed. That said, I think we could challenge for the title next year........I demand it. If we're not, then....then perhaps it's time for Luggy to move on.

I would say last night was my lowest point as well actually, just because some of us may not be old enough to have been around as long as you doesnt mean we can't have opinions on when we feel we have had a low point in our years of supporting southend.
