"Cockleshell Heroes" due to the tons of cockleshells laid to apparently help drain the pitch ... wouldn't happen today! As a young lad, I remember asking my Dad why we were playing in gold and black. Trautmann made several amazing saves, two in particular from Roy Hollis headers. Man City went on to win the FA Cup of course.

I remember my parents telling me about this game.Apparently the ball stuck in the mud when Hollis(?)was straight through on goal.

For quality of performance and considering the line up against us the League Cup defeat at Tottenham springs to mind. We lost to a disputed goal 1-0.

same as me liverpool game who hit the post that night for us thought it was stewart parker but not so sure.I was 15 and jampacked in the south bank.

I was 15 too.
Cold, wet and Snowy Roots Hall and it ended 0-0.
Looking at that you would think a game quickly forgotten but 33 years later and I still rate it as the best game I ever went to. The Newcastle game is a close second though. I remember walking out of that game and actually really believing we were going to make the top league in England. Oh were did it all go wrong?

Couple of years older and in the Paddock, Stuart Parker had been gone a couple of years, moved on to Dutch football so definitely Derek. It's the game above all others that sticks in my mind. Just to see all those true footballing legends walk out at Roots Hall was so memorable...and more so than against Man U because there was none of this playing weakened sides back then. No way in the current climate that match would have taken place, weather was awful!

Blackburn at home first year in the old 2nd Division 1991. This was the time Blackburn had brought in Daglish as manager and signed a whole host of top Division players on Jack Walker's money and we thrashed them 3-0 and the score flattered Blackburn we were that good.

The 91/92 season when we beat Newcastle 4-0 to go top of the league on new years day. We could only finish 12th. Although the rumour going round at the time was we took a dive because our ground needed too much work done to reach premier standard. I think that would have been the first year of being the premier. I see Cambridge finished 5th that year.

Beating that Judas **** on his return to Roots Hall.

A magic, magic day. Right up there with beating W*** H**.

I with you on that one; still hate Karen Brady to this day!!!

I would also say the Anglo-Italian cup game at home around the same time (also under Peter Taylor) think the score was around 4-2, but my memory isn't that good

Soon after those games Judas came back and stole most of our players and it started to go pear shaped!!

Other game that hasn't been mentioned is Grimsby at home when we were both flying, won 2-0 if I remember correctly; was Dave Martin and Tilson the scorers that day?

Kenny Dalglish sat at the front of the Directors box with his head in his hands - 'what have I gone and done' semed to be his thoughts. Newcastle New Years day also brilliant but the best of all time was at Goodison Park. Best performance in defeat seems a strange one, but I can still see Keith Jones dominating the midfield and urging the 'yellows' forward time and time again. Highlights programmes were not on as often as now with Sky Sports etc. and to this day have never seen the Southall save from Benji replayed.

Yep agree with this one, we were superb that day, Derby did not know what hit them and as you say they were a good team. This win was even more amazing as we lost 7 (seven) 0 (nil) at Derby in the League cup and 2 nil in the League match just the season before.

So to turn a heavy defeat into a comfortable away win in front of a big crowd was outstanding. I'm sure the goals from this match were on YouTube not sure if they still are?

Agreed - an away performance that i have never seen bettered by any Southend team.

This for me. I was behind the goal with all the other Southend fans and my dad (now deceased). Still cant believe the diving save that Neville Southal made to stop Benjy scoring!

As already said we played them off the park, but Peter Beardsley did the damage to us!

Beardsley was the difference that day and once he started playing deep we took over and played some lovely stuff,Everton supporters stayed on at end to applaud Southend off.

Derby away in November 1993 at the old Baseball ground would be a contender for me especially after suffering the two FA cup defeats there in 70's.
As I recall we went 1-0 early in the game but came storming back and bossed a strong Derby side with our attacking football and ran out 1-3 winners with goals from Hunt,Jones and Otto.

This for me too

I think we were 2-0 down against Rushden and came back to win 4-2. Barrington Belgrave and Mark Rawle running riot.

We came from 3-0 down against someone like Mansfield to draw 3-3 and nearly nicked it.

Rochdale that was YB. You're right about the Rushden game. We changed our style after going 2-0 down early and Buzz Newman made a triple first half substitution. Very brave and a massive gamble that paid off.

And just look at that league... nearly half the division is now League 2 or conference. That indicates a lot of teams "punching above their weight". ompare that to our last brief stint in the CCC when it was basically just us and Col Ewe who were small town visitors, with every other side having a nice stadium holding 15000 or more. No wonder we didn't survive long.
