Cricko's point is a good one though. The insinuation seems to be that hard-working supporters paying full whack would be subsidising work-shy layabouts. I would say that's rubbish, leaving aside the sweeping generalisations made about unemployed people, that the extra people it would attract would probably cover the loss of revenue from unemployed people that go already.

To say the idea, trying to reach out to a section of the public that may just appreciate a helping hand occasionally rather than the tired old stigmatising, it's grossly unjust is to over-react just a tad. A fiver discount for one match ticket doesn't really equate to upgrading Clacton for the Seychelles.

I just tend to think that the club do enough offers over the course of the season to accommodate this part of society.

"Unemployed people" are not a "section of the public" - they are no more or less a "section of the public" than people with dogs, or people who enjoy gardening : By referring to them as such you are the one stigmatising, not me! - people unfortunately will be unemployed for hundreds, probably thousands of different reasons, you can't just genralise them all together and say There You Go Lads, have a fiver off a match ticket..it's mad talk.

I'll tweak my earlier example....I am an 18 year old school leaver living at home with my parents, and am currently unemployed. You are a 35 year old single father working full time and earning just above the minimum wage with 2 young children to support. Which of us do you think would appreciate the helping hand more? I'd be swanning off the the game for a fiver and spending the rest of my giro on White Lightning on the way home, whilst you would have to cough up the best part of £25 to attend (£50 if you brought the kids along) which would be better spent elsewhere.

I agree with your last point - the club have done enough offers recently - and long may they continue, I just ask that they are available to everyone, regardless of their individual situation.

Been to Bury before and they had this and also noticed this at Orient

You pay concession price if your unemployed i.e by showing your signing book when purchasing a ticket.

Personally I think its a good idea having been unemployed its a fight to be able to afford to go to games but in the current climate with well over 2 Million unemployed it makes sense

communist.

kids for a quid is a nobrainer.....programme ,drink,gold ticket,delicious hot dog - onions = £10 +.
Also need an adult who may not be a season ticket holder ...extra voices in the stadium voila job done .

Norwichshrimper;1422735people unfortunately will be unemployed for hundreds said:
you should take a trip to the local job center . . . the vast majority of unemployed are either unemployable, or choose to claim benefits because it is easier to sponge off the state than work for the money !!!

most of the unemployed have no shame, no morals yet possess a total lack of self pride and self respect !

I signed on a couple of years ago as a condition of my MPPI insurance (which I never ended up claiming if youve read the other thread) and had the joys of going to the job centre a couple of times.

I know theres plenty of good hard working people unemployed but there are also lots of people out there who make no effort at all to get a job.

I would hope most people who want to work will only be unemployed a short while and wouldnt benefit as much as the long term layabouts.

Sorry but I dont see why we should subsidise them.

Agreed - id be pretty peeved if the person next to me in the ground had a subsidised ticket just because they couldn't be arsed to get a job ! Not saying that this is the case for all unemployed, or even the majority, but sadly there are too many out there already living a life subsidised by me as a tax payer that don't deserve a penny as far as I'm concerned !

I'm self employed and work upwards of 60 hours a week. I cant get to many matches because of this. My taxes pay for your benefits so why should you get reduced price admission to see a match whilst I'd be working?

Money may be a struggle for you trueblue, but it is a struggle for many people who work as well. I fear that if a job was to interfere with your SUFC supporting, you wouldnt take it. Forgive me if i'm wrong but I doubt I am

Unemployed people? At football?

Whatever next?

If you cannot afford a prawn sandwich ...this is most definately not the sport for you.

Unemployed? Bugger off to croquet with the rest of your mates!! What we need at Roots Hall is at least 2,500 prawn sarny boys and girls.

And while we are on the subject of "haves and have nots"...ditch those appalling pies for chateaubriand at half time!

Toffs in...the poor out! x

A question.

A supporter follows The Shrimpers for 20 years. He or she travels to a number of away games to support the lads..if it is Southend United it will be through both thick and thin.

That person is then made redundant.

It takes the supporter three or four months to find employment.
Is it outrageous and an afront to employed people paying full price ..if Southend United helps the supporter out by offering a reduced price?

Can anyone, honestly see a problem in helping a fanatical Shrimper through hard times?

If you can? Shame on you.

I have just read two threads on here, one about how we haven't got any money , how its all doom and gloom because we are skint and another one about how we should be cutting our income even further by cutting the ticket prices.

Football fans eh

I think this greys the area between going to a football match being a privelage/luxury rather than a basic human need/right.

Yes a person needs food, water, shelter and so on, and this should be provided when they fall on hard times, however, the provision of free entry to a football match just because they happen to like football is not a matter of human survival.

The holiday point someone mentions above is a bit extreme, but a fair one. If someone had been going to the same resort in Turkey for 15 years, and was unfortunately unemployed one year and couldnt go, would they be entitled to a free holiday, or would they forgoe it just for the one year?

Wrong.

Mr or Mrs cannot afford £22.

Mr or Mrs ..may just be able to find £10.

An empty seat...or £10. If it is the money...it is increased revenue.

We haven't got enough money at Southend United.

Mr or Mrs Ugly & Unemployed cannot afford £22.
Mr or Mrs Ugly & Unemployed may scrape £10.

So, an empty seat that earns SUFC £0. Or a used seat and £10?

Wrong.

Mr or Mrs cannot afford £22.

Mr or Mrs ..may just be able to find £10.

An empty seat...or £10. If it is the money...it is increased revenue.

But why should someone get a seat at £10 instead of £22 just because they are unemployed.

As someone else said, someone may earn a wage, a low wage at that, and have a family to support. This person pays taxes out of his low wages, why then should this person be treated different to the person that does not work/earn/pay tax ???

Wrong.

Mr or Mrs cannot afford £22.

Mr or Mrs ..may just be able to find £10.

An empty seat...or £10. If it is the money...it is increased revenue.

and there are 100 of these so we get an extra 1000 in

there are also 100 fans who currently attend paying £22 who are now entitkled to pay £10

Club loses 1200 quid

and I honestly believe that there are more unemployed who currently attend and pay the full price than there will be additional tickests sold to the Unemployed currently not attending

Nah, I'll leave that to my 15 year old. Lol.

Nice negative rep !

Why should I go to the job centre ? I have a job, I bust my balls off during the week, I have a young family to support, with increased prices for gas, electricty, water etc etc, thus reducing my disposal income, why should I then also expect to sit next to a person that may not be bothered to work, that has paid less than me ???

I read lots of comments from people I used to go to school with - all talking about their day of non working, down the pub etc ..... they dont seem that bothered that they are not working , and then you expect me to accept that they should also get a reduced seat at football !!

Do me a favour !
