RIP Maggie Thatcher.

Should there be a day-off work to mark this?

Can you see a link here Barna? The Government clearly identified that it didn't need 5 men to connect a phone line, or that a bloke who worked a drilling machine was perfectly capable of moving the finished product himself without having another bloke to do it for him while saying "its not my job"

Unfortunately, Thatcher's Tory government didn't attempt to provide any alternative employment for the millions thrown out of work, financed on the dole by North Sea Oil revenues.

"Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope."

Instead, she added to the discord and increased the despair for millions.

And improved the hope for millions more.

Barna, seeing that you have a penchant for research, can you find me the figures for how many workers were laid off in the following industries under Wilson and Thatcher:

coal miners
steel workers
Car factory workers
railway workers

Sorry I've got some CAE essays to mark.
In any case, I'd suggest you direct your efforts to the Blair/Brown governments, which continued Thatcher's de-industrialisation policy with even more zealotry than she did.

I'm sorry you don't feel any compassion for the millions who lost their jobs because of the Thatcher governments de-industrialisation policies.
Who says I dont? I some stage hard measures have to be taken for the long term benefit of the majority. Waste and badly fun finances catch up in the end.
Most unions at the time were not prepared to discuss any changes. It was a simple out on strike mentality.
I think you mentioned before that you spent time on a picket line.
Telly us why and what you achieved as against what you hoped to achieve.

If Thatcherism really saved the UK why are we in such a mess today?

Last time I looked this thread was about Thatcher and not my own, rather insignificant part, in the political events of a bygone era.

One thing I will say about Thatcher, she had good political antenna.I remember goiing on a demo against her when she came to Birmingham as the notorious Education secretary ("milk snatcher") in Heath's government.Tbh,there weren't very many of us-less than twenty -IIRC,there.About the same number of Old Bill. You should have seen her eyes light up when she saw us, as she got out of her official car.She smiled in our direction. She knew she'd be on the news that night. And she was.

I'm sure her family were in stitches.
I'm sure her family were far too busy to be listening as to what was going to be number 1 (or 2 in this case). Infact they were far more likely to have heard about it from the news coverage. The censorship and coverage is far more pathetic, even hardcore Thatcherites like Farage & Davies say it should have been played, and had the media not created such a fuss far less hurt would have been done to her family. It's just a song, and as we all know sticks and stones may break bones, but words don't hurt you.

I was interested to hear Farage say yesterday that if Thatcher were still in power there wouldn't be any need for UKIP.

What sort of people protest at a funeral?

You weren't even born you ridiculous bunch of *****.

View attachment 2268

As you say they werent even born, and whats it matter, she cant see the protest.

I lived through her terms and I suffered the stupidity of the poll tax yet I wouldnt protest. Then again miners and those communities will feel a lot different Im sure.
