This absolute tosh

I seem to remember us being desperate for a goal in the summer, and Payne coming off the bench and winning back a ball which went on to lead to an injury time equaliser. But I must be mistaken. As we were, PB knows best.

You know Phil know's best.

Jack IMO will go far,he has the skill to beat his man ,he can score from distance,he can set up goals,of course he would benefit with a minder in the middle but his game is attacking but he can drop in when required.

Brilliant prospect and if he keeps his feet on the ground could play top level.

The only player in the team who there is an air of excitement when he is on the ball. Probably couldve tackled Ajose better than Atkinson did on saturday too.

Brown: Talks on new deal for Payne have 'stalled'

SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has revealed contract talks have stalled with the club’s attacking midfielder Jack Payne.

Lots going on behind the scenes it would seem. Clearly the the last three performances are not that of a team backing the manager. Lock ins, public slagging off of players etc by PB has clearly affected the team morale. Maybe JP just wants to keep his options open and see what happens during the rest of the season, maybe him and PB dont get on etc. For its worth be brings a lot to the team in an attacking sense, my only criticism is that he can be a bit light weight at times. As other have said however the side doesnt always look balanced with him in it. If PB thinks JP is the real deal then he should build the team around him, i dont think this is the case though.

Wonder how many more spankings PB is away from getting the hook? RM sticks by his managers, but from an outsider looking in we've got our best players well below form and he seems to have lost the changing room completely. Our fixtures for the next month or so are really tough.

Given that 14/15 match winless streak we went on in League 2 in 2013/14 it would be a surprise, but I'm more concerned by the last three results as there seem to be issues beyond simply underperforming. During that streak we just couldn't score, which made winning difficult.

yeah as shrimperjon points out, the bits and pieces coming out from PB and the media do seem extremely concerning. We have a decent team and I'm definitely pro-Brown, but the last three games and a fallout from that have put us into a poor situation, and if it means were going to lose some of our brightest prospects then the buck stops with Brown.

*Cue someone saying the players haven't been paid in 3, 2, 1...*

I think the important thing to take out of the last three games isn't the fact we have lost, that happens in football. Its the manor of the defeats that concern me the most. I originally put it down to fatigue, especially the Milllwall defeat, but the performance was again very poor against Doncaster and but then even with 6 changes on Saturday a very similar type performance. Lets be honest, Colchester should have beaten us boxing day, great day out and three points but we got lucky on the day. Even Saturday Swindon gifted us our two goals. Once they got hold of the game there was only one winner. So we have mixed the team around, changed players, some forced some PB decision, yet Saturdays performance mirriored on many ways the previous two or three. I really fear for us over the next month. Peterborough and Coventry are both free scoring and even Colchester are now showing signs of improvement.

He would get in most teams in this division. Sometimes you have to indulge flair players like Jack. He is the only player who can pick up the ball and run past people. He is the only player who looks like scoring when he gets in and around the box, he has a great shot on him. Brown seems to prfer the hard workers like Deegan and Timlin who whilst good players cant pick a pass or shoot for toffee. I wouldve thought that someone who can hold onto the ball like Jack would actually be a benefit in a situation where you either need a goal or are holding onto a lead.

I don't agree with that at all. I don't think he's lost the dressing room, I think we're just going through a bad patch. Who would now be happy with the clean sheet mentality which I've always agreed with. If you don't concede, you don't lose - SIMPLES

I don't know for sure if he's lost the dressing room, but the bits and bobs coming out are definitely worrying and to me feel like something more than just a poor run of form.

Completely agree about 'clean sheet mentality' - I was always for that. I felt the balance could be improved a bit, but it's no surprise that in three of the four leagues, the top team has the tightest defence, and not the most goals scored. we should be basing everything on our decent defence and working from there.

Once you step up in class your then against quicker thinking ,possibly faster ,fitter but Defo superior accuracy from their forwards and midfielders in shooting and passing.

I agree it does seem that way, but I can't for the life of me think why? It was going so well only a couple of weeks ago and morale in the camp seemed great. I didn't see this coming at all. I guess a lot can change in 2 weeks...
