Even if the window was open I dont think non league is what people think it is.

We had a discussion on here a little while back which showed the non league "gems" still sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds. Amounts that were far to high to take a "punt" on.

Generally if someone is good enough to step up from non-league to league one they are going to cost 6 figures, I think people think you can pick them up cheap.

Just to mention again that of the 31 players signed from the lower leagues whilst the transfer window was open, the majority by far were free , only a few went for undisclosed sums and those where disclosed were not that large

Often think this about Posh. They've made so much money in transfers by buying in non-league talent & selling on, made some pretty big signings too (didn't they pay £1m for Britt Assombalonga? before selling him for a few mil more), got a rich owner, the works, yet as you say hardly any better than us. To be fair I think they're bloody good at generating money, but pretty awful at putting it to good use.

Good point they are really good at it and have made millions in spotting the lower league talent and selling them on. Also whilst only two points above us in the league , I wonder whether they are £12million in debt or whaqtever our current figure is? I wouldnt mind being mid table and solvent?

Sorry, but I'm just not getting this obsession with wanting to sign non-league players. If Peterborough are really good at it and all it's got them is mid-table League One what is the big deal?
How much of their healthy financial position is down to having a chairman who put money into the club?
How much of our debt is down to management fee and ground rent charges from our beloved owner's other companies?

Names? Signing non league players is obviously possible but that doesn't mean they are any better than what we have.

How many of them scored goals last season?

We are talking about goal scorers here, and the players who top the scorers table in that league usually go for 6 figures, we had a list of them posted a couple of weeks ago. THe ones that scored goals the year before and went on to do well in the league last year had all moved for big fees.

Cox hasn't featured since Scunthorpe.

Brown stated that there were one or two players who clearly he wasn't happy with and they would be whittled out of the club.

We sign a striker co-incidentally until the end of the transfer window.

Mooney is currently in favour, Ranger due to return next week.

Where does this leave Cox?

4th in line, that's where. And he's our marquee signing.

A 6fter, needs to hold the ball up and give our slow midfield a chance to join in attacks. Was very notable on Tues night our midfield were slow in supporting (other than the first 15mins when they were superb), the team is shaping up to be quite a few big fellas and this will help with scrapping results like against Oxford, home and away. Our football aint great, the midfield dont show for the ball but it is changing with the likes of Ferdinand bring the ball out. Defenders supporting midfielders, strikers holding the ball upfront and enabling the whole team to get up, yeah i'll go with this signing. And experience at this level will prove key to building a good side. Its imperative we get that wing play into action and get behind teams.

Phil surely must have had an idea when he signed him how he intended to use Cox?

Look at Williams...Phil refused to play him in daft cup games,wouldn't play him in league 2 ,yet somehow thinks Jason can make the jump from Chelmsford to league 1,it's crazy.

We are not a club that will invest in the non league 'gem market'. Our money has and will go into the academy. Rather than risk £500,000 on one untried player we can run the whole academy including all these backroom boys that some like to moan about. The other problem is that some of these 'gems' are on some decent money and would want a lot more than we pay. One of the forwards at Ebbsfleet, who are in the NLS (six tier) is on £2,000 per week.

If you ever do pop over to training you will see the young lads getting plenty of advice from the likes of Barrett or Ferdinand at the end of a short practice match. The other day AB was advising a young forward on how best to lose a defender. Economically its the best way forward.....Youth and experience. Neither cost that much.

I just hope none of the players read these posts , they make me understand why players with potential ,ala Payne and Bentley left us for such glamour clubs as Huddersfield and Brentford, and why i wouldnt be surprised to see Leonard leave at the end of his contract and any others with potential .:thumbdown:

Brown has already stated he would prefer to play 4-4-2, but that clearly hasn't worked as it left us too exposed. Therefore he's had to change to a formation that suits us better for the time being, which is the one down the middle.

Much rather have a manager that adapts to a situation than one that continues to stick to a plan that doesn't work.

The route we have taken with signing old worn out forwards on their last legs is IMO truly bizarre.

Look when we had Eastwood,yes he was a lazy so and so on the pitch,yet he could receive the ball drop his shoulder and bang the onion bag was bulging,excitement he offered which every fan lapped up,that is football.

We are served up old blokes who are blowing and looking disinterested ,it's embarrassing,these old vets never deliver but still demand decent salaries which most on here dream of.

Take Bilel playing park football and snapped up,they are about...just seems to me this club recieved the released list and just picked at random.

Some non league gems are costly. Many are not and it depends at which stage you take the plunge. Conor Wood has gone from Soham to Leicester City. He is only 20 and cost zilch. Darren Foxley, released by Daggers academy, is now a prospect trialling with Bournemouth.

We could, organise regular training with and trial matches against, our under 21 squad and give hopefuls an opportunity and give ourselves a better way to track potential. We don't always have to part with money.

The non league has as many good players that need a chance as the league has poor players given too many chances.
