How did your ankles & knees feel after that? I remember it wasn’t exactly a green baize.
No idea of the costs mate, but it can’t have been overly expensive. I like it though, and as far as non-league grounds go, it’s a nice little setup, which brings the club money in, when there’s no games on. As it’s a plastic pitch, they also rent the stadium out, which again chucks a few quid in the coffers.
And as for Thurrock (or Purfleet in old money), they are gone for good, as far as I know. Haven’t heard anything about a revival, but I remember about a year ago, there was talk of it becoming a community football facility with plastic pitches.
Unlike today, my knees never hurt back then, but its to long ago to remember individual pitches. Though our home ground (LFB) just off the Purfleet road was one of the best. Nice and big but always rolled, so you could play a bit even in the winter.
Just think, if the government had a special Sky tax. Say 10%, that would be £1b over a three year TV deal...If it went straight to football, 1000 clubs could be given £1m to fund the same set up as Aveley......So in just 10 years every club in the land from level 9/10 , or Essex senior and above could be self sufficient. With their own bar function area and 4G pitches to have endless grass roots/kids football.
The down side is Gareth Bale would have to live on just £540,000 per week instead of £600,000
