Post-Match Thread and Ratings Tranmere Rovers 2-0 Southend United

Hi Tranmere fan here,

Just wanted to say we know how it feels really, we fell through the leagues into non league with a similar run and its horrible

As for the game I thought you were the better side in fairness and we were awful and extremely lucky

It really looked like a relegation level battle between 2 sides, we have only had 2 or more shots on target in 50% of games

Try and keep with it, its tough and the season we went down from this league was the worst I have had as a fan, fingers crossed it wont happen to you and you stay up

If you look at the evidence we are a very very poor side .In fact the worst side in the history of the club .Its upsetting whats happening and how will we get out of this rut

We havent won a match in ages mark has now got all hes back room staff in which is what he wanted .We have to start winning and soon

He signed a centre back but doesn’t play him or plays him at full back. Perhaps because he is not big the strong and commanding centre back we need. Dieng and Taylor are hopeless and when Lennon is our best centre back we have problems.
With Lennon's height and build he should be the strong and commanding centre back we need. For some reason he is not getting his head on any defensive set pieces. There is no way someone like Clarke should be able to get to them ahead of him.

Think you fail to give the wily old bloke the credit he deserves. We need someone of his nature to teach both our forwards and defenders how to be a little less "nice" to our opponents!

the managers strategy when defending free quicks is a high line - that is outside the 18 yard line by about 5 yards ..

goals change games -

1 - 0 to salford ... free kick from left - SUFC high line

1 - 0 to Tranmere ... free kick from left - SUFC high line

another day another formation another team selection ..

another defeat

Agree with you OBL. I think it's a type of skill that can be as important as any other. Retaliation often gets the other player a booking and if nothing else usually stops their player doing what he wants to do. I
The milwall forward (was it morrison) is a classic example. Pinching scraping studding all through a game. Ball or no ball.
We have 2 or 3 that can do it... Niggling at ankles etc. Cox did it well too.
It's another one of those things that only gets learnt playing 400+ league games.
Macca will have it in his locker I hope.
In league 2 it's Bully or be bullied. Some discreet some blatant.

Lennon is quite quick as well - especially for his size - so he should be the first onto anything no matter what line we play (and a high line for defending deep free kicks is a perfectly fine tactic if players do their jobs properly).

"a perfectly fine tactic" true ....

not for us though we have just lost goals/games 2 weeks running

I feel for some reason that the players are reacting a bit slowly in general from set pieces, both attacking and defending. Definitely some more work required on the training ground - I wonder if there is a good freelance set piece specialist coach who we could call upon now and again to come in and give sessions.

Bollox to accepting defeat & relegation.
It’s not that easy just to take it on the chin, drop down & pop back.
Just ask the likes of Barnet, Chesterfield, Stockport, Torquay, Hartlepool, Notts County, Halifax, Wrexham, Yeovil, York & Darlington, many of them historically long lived league sides.

If we go down we’re likely not coming back for a while..
If it means a change of manager to scrap our way up the table then so be it.
We don’t owe MM a thing so if he continues in the same vein over the next 10 games then get rid & try someone else..

On the contrary, I suspect it we get rid of him we'll owe him more than we can afford.

Powell, Bond, Waddock, Campbell, Molesley - we can't just keep go cycling through managers. We need to give one the chance to build something. Unfortunately the time when we should have been building foundations was 5 years ago and ours were built on sand with no thought as to the long term consequences which we are now suffering as a result.

We are now in the position where we have to stick with a manager, even if they take us down again. That's the reality and it's as grim as ****.

At the end of the season we have just 2 or 3 players under contract: Akinola (who has yet to appear and did well in the conference last year), Harry Phillips and maybe Nathaniel-George (no contract length was given). Even most of MM's signings have been short term (eg all the loans, McCormack (although that was Ron's signing), Hobson. We'll be rebuilding completely.

He certainly did Acquah for guile today defensively, helped by the ref, but while he's a presence he is neither massively tall and definitely not fast and we should not have been letting him get on the end of their attacking set pieces. Looking at the highlights of his goal and other good chance, they are good balls in but the defenders either don't read the dip or they are caught flat footed and not making the jump properly.

Aside from the set piece debate I thought Olayinka looked a proper player - energy, passing range and a good physical presence for a youngster. He's listed as 5'9" but to me looks a couple of inches taller. If he has the right mentality and can perform to that level on a regular basis he should have the potential to play in the championship in a few years time.

Problem is Lennon is absolute dog **** as all Charlton fans said he was. Him and Dieng shouldn't be playing league football.

I was hoping he would come good as it's rare to find tall left-footed centre-backs with some pace - and he's also comfortable on the ball when he doesn't lean back and play those silly long diagonals. Unfortunately slowly coming round to the thought that his positioning and concentration just isn't good enough. He's at the age where centre backs usually develop the fastest so hopefully he proves me wrong and starts to cut the mistakes out of his game - we need it.

What did we expect. We sign a manager who has been managing the dog and duck fc and bought with him his bin man, his best mates brothers cousin as gk coach and someone who once got Rushden and Diamonds into the championship playoffs in champ manager 98/99. We have made horrendous signings with our permanent signings, absolute crocks, who have a history of being crocks - despite being at a time where the free transfer market has a wider selection of players than ever before due to covid. Im realistic enough to know that even Jurgen Klopp wouldn't keep us up with these players but by christ we are making it hard with continual basic errors.

We should of gone for a manager who has experience at this level of keeping clubs up to whether the storm, we should have backroom staff with league experience and we should not, given the recent years of poor due diligence on players, be signing people who have spent more time on the treatment table than Katie Price!

I notice that the knives are sharpening, come xmas time i think the knives will become razors if we dont start getting some results.
