Pubs in Southend

Went to Porters many years ago. It was very much 'a local pub for local people' back then (everything stopped when you walked in). Beer was nothing special - no draft ales. But then as I say that was many years ago might be different now.

To be fair to Porters I thought I should google them.

It's described in many reviews as a male dominated pub for locals. So I would argue the first part of my post stands. However, they regularly serve Shepherd & Neame's Spitfire and one other guest ale and according to a photo Guiness. The rest I'm guessing is generic 'fizzwater' of various shades and strengths (they all taste the same to me).

Anywhere is better than the blue boar. It’s a shame the other pun got taken over, even for of a shame that it changed so you couldn’t do a circle lap through the toilets anymore. Pubs are trash near the ground. Cricketers is my go to pub before the game. Cross the road for some nice fish and chips then walk to the ground nicely full with the adequate amount of booze in the system to cheer on the lads at full throttle.

It looks like the sort of place that would have McEwans or Tennants on draught which coupled with the utterly charmless exterior is why I have avoided the place.

Sadly, I agree.

I liked it when the owners where at the spread. Decent pub then and busy.

Now the spread is barley open and a shell of what it was.

The blue boar is so small. On a match day you can't move.

I tend to plot up in the railway before the games these days. It is my local and a decent pub, full stop.

Just become aware of a pub called Porters not far from the eastern side of Chalkwell Park in Westborough Road. I see it sells beers from the LOS Brewery (from a FB friend's post). Can any 'Zoners tell me their experience of it, please? Looks like it could be worth a visit.
Most random pub ever, looks like it should be someone's front room!

The mile and a third is the place to go Rob (as we did last year) will be there on Saturday before migrating to see Barna at the Hamlet.

Yeah agreed, this is a great shout. A few pubs you can stop at en route to the Hall too afterwards, like the aforementioned West Road Tap (if open) or the Cricketers which always has a good amount of Southend fans in it on matchdays.

Never heard of it, but if it sells LOS brewery beers then it has got something good already. Regularly drink in the Legra Tap, owned by the brewery and they always have a decent selection of ales on tap.

I used to do a seafood service on a Fri & Sat night in late 90's, calling in many pubs. I ventured there twice on Sat nights, both times about 4 individuals in there.
Guess it must have 'upped it's game' since then, or it would have closed.
