First Dance Song at your Wedding...

Rayleigh Weir

Not just a roundabout⭐⭐🦐
As per an off-hand comment in a thread yesterday - I thought I'd sound out the Shrimperzone faithful for how far we're all willing to sacrifice our musical integrity for the loves of our lives...

Basically, I'm of an age now where I seem to get invited to shedloads of weddings, and I'm constantly fascinated by peoples choice of 'first dance song'. Invariably this shows far more of a female influence, and I'd imagine that the vast majority of them are chosen by the bride with varying degrees of veto allowed to the groom.

For my wedding we chose the Stereophonics and Jools Holland cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for our slushy first dance, followed by "Smooth" by Santana and Rob Thomas. The first song has some beautiful luvvy lyrics sung by an (as then) up and coming indie band which was nicely in line with both my wife and I's music tastes, the second allowed us to put in a choreographed salsa number (my wife is a dancer/choreographer). I was also allowed to choose Ben Harper's "Not Fire, Not Ice" as the closing song - but then being a Weir family wedding everyone was too p!ssed to care by that point...

So, my question is - how far did (or would) you allow your own musical tastes and prejudices to affect her perfect day? Or, to put it simply - what did (would) you have as your first song and why?

WHEN YOU TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME (Julio Iglesias and Dolly Parton)

I wanna feel this way
Longer than time
I wanna know your dreams
And make them mine

I wanna change the world
Only for you
All the impossible
I wanna do

I wanna hold you close
Under the rain
I wanna kiss your smile
And feel your pain
I know what’s beautiful
Looking at you
Here in a world of lies
You are the true

(Chorus)
And baby
Everytime you touch me
I become a hero
I’ll make you safe no matter where you are
And bring you
Anything you ask for
Nothing is above me
I’m shining like a candle in the dark
When you tell me that you love me

I wanna make you see
Just what I was
Show you the loneliness
And what it does
You walked into my life
To stop my tears
Everything’s easy now
I have you here

(Repeat Chorus)

In a world without you
I would always hunger
All I need is your love to make me stronger

(Repeat Chorus)

I'll get the ball rolling...

'Talk Tonight' by Oasis. Lots of personal significance for Mrs Fatshrimp and I.

Hardest song to try and dance to though!

All of my mates understood why we chose the song, but all of the older rellies etc had now idea why. Think they were all expecting something a little more mainstream.

We had Long after tonight is all over by Jimmy Radcliffe, wasnt my choice I wanted under my thumb by wayne Gibson...I have been bloody compromising with the woman ever since.

We had 'You're My Best Friend' by Queen as our first dance song...that was the missus' choice.

Although to say I danced is sretching the meaning of the word somewhat

"Best of My Love" by The Emotions, followed by a traditional Scottish ceilidh for the rest of the evening.

:)

The song that meant a lot to me had already been sung by my choir at the church service at which we'd got married, namely Estrela, by Gal Costa.

Talk tonights a great tune, the version with Paul Weller is even better.

Not that im married but there can only be one song for me.

You're the best thing by The Style Council

i'm picking the majority of the music at mine, as it's going to be one of few parts of the whole thing where i have something useful to contribute! think I'm going for 'More Love' by Smokey Robinson + the Miracles. mushy, but classic.

I think I've won this competition.

We had Dennis Waterman - I could be so good for you.

Music is the most important thing in any reception. After all, that's what makes a good one and that's the only thing people talk about after. You never hear anyone saying how nice the service was when you're talking about the wedding 3 months later do you?

My advice is get a band. We had a band and DJ and aside from the music for the first couple of dances and when the buffet was served the DJ did F*** All.

He was really fed up. He still got his money though! Band played covers most of the night and they were superb. Plus I got the chance to knock out a few tunes. Perk of being the Groom I guess!

I went to a wedding last year where the bride and groom had an almighty row, and the DJ had given up on the evening and played Ace of Spades by Motorhead and some gangsta rap song littered throughout by mother-f***ers.

We had the Harry Connick Junior version of "It had to be you" for our first dance.

My wife walked down the isle to Trumpet Voluntary (Same as Di and Charles) which was played on Harp and Pachobel's Canon in D whilst signing the register.

We had a mates band play at our reception and everyone loved it, we had friends DJing also. We had a good mix of music...i'll never forget my dad putting the first track on.....Enter Sandman by Metallica! What a legend my dad is :D

As we had a civil wedding, Southchurch Hall...highly recommended , we had to choose music for the ceremony too, I wanted songs that meant something too both of us and that wasn't crap. So we went through our collections and selected a few which we then put on a cd for the day.
Walk forever by my side - The Alarm was clear favourite, with another Alarm number, It just don't get any Better than this , next.
Along with parisienne Walways and Tracy Chapmans Wedding song, we had our 4 for the day.

First dance was off the cd, Walk forever..

Unusual enough to draw comments but the lyrics were spot on...

And also the choice of the songwriter Mike Peters at his own wedding

"Unbreakable" by Worstlife................ Not too impressed by this one which led me to introducing my new wife to regulars at the reception venue as "My 1st wife".
