Apple trees

It seems pretty likely that the tree has been stressed somehow and jettisoned its cargo as a result, but just what that stress was isn't clear. Could be weather or disease or root damage.

Would go with this - parents have 4 apple trees in their garden (Brentwood, obviously similar conditions to Benfleet) and they are all doing nicely.

Actually, just looking at it, a lot of the bark looks stripped - squirrel damage?!

I bet it was ant and dec dressed in balaclavas but if it was we will let them off because they are nice guys!

If they are grey's then shoot the tree rats, skin and gut them, stuff with breadcrumbs, basil, garlic, chestnuts and red wine, encase completely in clay and roast in the ashes of a wood fire for a couple of hours. Serve with a good red, a decent gravy and roast spuds.

Mmmmm sounds good to me and I'm a veggie!

Edit: Could be voles if the damage is mainly low down. They probably aren't worth stuffing and eating.
