Are we starting to see an end to political correctness

I was waiting for the H&S comparison !

H&S is another abused phrase. The vast majority of "Health and safety" bans which reach the media / public domain and not H&S issues. They are risk assesment issues, brought about by the insurance companies desperately trying to reduce their exposure to litigation happy individuals thus keeping peoples insurance premium down.
No doubt the Pub example above was more to do with the insurance company saying If you take your dart board down , your public liability premium will drop because of the elimination of pi55ed people throwing sharp things about

I am a Liberal. There i said it. And 'Political Correctness' really gets on my nerves.

I whole heartedly back any law or regulation that prevents discrimination against fellow human beings.

However so much of 'PC' policies annoy me. As far as i can see instead of reducing tension between different groups whether that be sexual, racial, or religious they often seem to make the situations worse, and breed mistrust.

We tiptoe around issues, as far as I'm concerned we should have a national holiday for St Georges Day, we should be able to celebrate Christmas etc by putting up decorations wherever we want and schools have nativity plays etc. We should also give muslim festivals and other groups more coverage, teach these things in school.

It's only through learning more about each other that we'll develop a more respectful and harmonious society, not hiding our differences away like they're something to be ashamed of.

:soapbox: Rant Over.

Anyone who thinks we are forbidden to celebrate Christmas must be mental.

It will only be a few weeks before the decorations and Xmas song mixes make an appearance in the department stores and shopping centres.

Or a more disrespectful and unharmonious society

Yeah, but you are confusing the Commercialisation of Christmas with the Political Attitude to Christmas, so in general all shops and supermarkets will plug Christmas like mad because there is a fortune to be made, while Local Councils (and it is usually Local Councils or Education Departments) agonise over whether to allow a Christmas Tree in the Town Hall, or schools to stage Nativity plays or even whether to rename Christmas "Winterval" so as not to upset those of other faiths.

but surely that would only be the case if people took a negative view about what they learnt.

True, a better knowledge of other people may cause aggravation but only to those who know but don't understand.

An example is something I read a few years ago about a bloke who had been harrassed by several individuals after the heard that he was a paediatrician.
The knew about him but they did not understand (That because it has the word paed in it that does make him a kiddy fiddler)

A little learning is a dangerous thing - Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744) in An Essay on Criticism, 1709

Talking about political correctness, it's getting worse in schools at the moment.

We have to mark work in green pen, cos if we mark anything in red, it's considered an 'angry' comment. :stunned:

Yes, trust me to be negative.

The point is they may learn more about them, and not like it rather than not understand. Presumably most people will benefit form learning more about others, but not everyone will.

Oi, stop taking things personally !

I had actually assumed that you were being objective and bringing the counter argument to the table......

I agree most would benefit, there will always be a radical minority who will mis-interpret teachings .
To me, tolerance is not about like or dislike (within reason of course , criminal acts can't be tolerated) even if I dislike someone or their views , opinions , they still have a right to voice them (as long as it is not in an offensive manner) I will tolerate them. Doesn't mean I have to be their bestest friend

The Daily Mirror had an article about Christmas shopping today !

That's ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. I can't understand how there are still people left to boycott it. Perhaps those 400,000 or whatever number it is are looking for a rise through antagonism...

Of course not everyone will, but that doesn't mean it's not worth trying surely?

Shrimperzone is an ideal example, many of us have opposing views but most of us respect each others right to our own opinions.

Ok maybe I was a bit premature off the starting blocks especially after seeing a couple of politicians dancing around issues on Question Time last night. Surprisinsgly the first time I've seen Ian Duncan-Smith so forthright in his own views.

Then I saw a prog on Sky where bystanders faces had been blanked out and just seen the same in piccies on passengers Current Bun. WTF and why ?

probably the result of a series of court decisions that have ended up with the UK having some of the most hardcore privacy + libel laws in the developed world. this one doesn't come from the govt though, but wealthy 'victims' of press intrusion who have very good, expensive lawyers. the result is that UK journalists are a lot less free to practice investigative journalism than their colleagues in the US and a lot of other nations, and a by-product is that media companies are terrified of using anyone's image/word without their consent. A couple of years back i was tangentially involved in a Radio 4 programme- the person being interviewed was Jarvis Cocker, but i was in a group showing him around my uni and my voice might have been picked up in the background. accordingly, I had to sign 4 copies of a consent form in case any of it made it into the broadcast..

Not yet....but with the birthrates the way they are, you better start thinking about it. You may be to old to worry about it but if present trends continue, your grandchildren will be in a minority in this once european country

i hope so then we can get all the benefits and free housing, be allowed to have our national flags on parpade have a national holiday when ever we want not have to wear hard hats on building sites never have to wear correct uniforms, duck prisons sentences in case it offends and generally do as we please, whilst dishing out the odd beating because we are not understood as a race aaaaaahhhh role on being a minority and of course MK Shrimper can dedicate his life arrse licking me and my family, maybe even doing abit of running around for me
