Best film soundtrack.

If we are talking about music written specifically for a film I'd plump for the Third Man or the Ipcress File.

Get Carter as well is a fantastic soundtrack. (Roy Budd, who also did Steptoe and Son, Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, The Wild Geese and Who Dares Wins)

Karras' zither is also great in the Third Man

ET is also good, especially the finale. In fact, John Williams is a legend.
 
Lalo Schifrin has not been mentioned yet.

Dirty Harry is another superb soundtrack.
Dirty Harry is indeed great, as is Magnum Force (also by Schifrin). In the same year as MF he did Enter the Dragon which is probably my favourite Schiffrin soundtrack - those kung-fu sound effects on the main theme are incredible. Those 3 soundtracks form a pretty impressive body of work for a 2 year period IMO.
