I think the common denominator is that these singles were either huge hits or those best remembered by the vast majority of people. The Smiths didn't really have a huge hit ("Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" got to No. 10 which - I think - was their highest ever chart position) and I doubt many people could instantly bring one of the songs to mind as quickly as all of those above; I certainly couldn't. To be fair, they also left out The Jam, Madness and a few other top bands but that's the list given and we'll work with it ...

There's only 4 songs I really like on that list;

Party Fears Two - The Associates
Club Country - The Associates
Fade to Grey - Visage
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division

My favourite 80s hit single is missing - The Smiths "This Charming Man"

Fair point by Mike re The Smiths. For me, the best band of the 80s (in fact one of my top three acts of all time) but they were much more of an 'album' rather than 'singles' band.

The ommission of Madness from the list is unbelievable though

Still, here's my picks from what is a pretty poor list IMHO

Blue Monday - New Order
Atomic - Blondie
True Faith - New Order
The Look of Love - ABC
She Drives Me Crazy - FYC
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Take One Me - A-Ha
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me - Culture Club
Don't You Want Me - Human League
Enola Gay - OMD

Shout - Tears for Fears
Blue Monday - New Order
Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
down under - Men at work
relax - Frankie goes to hollywood
Take on me - A-Ha
don't go - yazoo
true faith - new order
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Eurythmics
Suspicious Minds - Fine Young Cannibals

but my reall top 10 of the 80s would be:

head like a hole - Nine Inch Nails
terrible lie - Nine Inch Nails
down in it - Nine Inch Nails
sanctified - Nine Inch Nails
something i can never have - Nine Inch Nails
kinda i want to - Nine Inch Nails
that's what i get - Nine Inch Nails
the only time - Nine Inch Nails
ringfinger - Nine Inch Nails

or the Nine Inch Nails album Pretty Hate Machine!

AFD by Guns N roses

The greatesr rock album of time!!

Lot of rubbish on that list, would struggle to pick 3 or 4 from there.

As I said on the other thread, the 80's were sh!t!

I never said the list was perfect or definitive of the 80s!! I said that this list has been doing the rounds and we all chose our favourite ten from that list. Personally there would have been others on there but it couldn't happen, otherwise you would be defining the favourites for weeks! Come on, Andy! Play the game!
