The problem is fairly bloomin obvious. In order to score more goals you need to have more players getting forward into attacking positions. All of our players do have the ability to score, but not when the majority of our midfielders seem reluctant to bust a gut to burst into the box and put pressure on the opposition. We look a fabulous team when we attack at pace and have plenty of players surging forward. But this happens all too rarely at Roots Hall these days. Who would have guessed Anthony Grant a few years back would have a scoring purple patch ? this was because he was allowed ( & encouraged ) to rampage into dangerous areas and be on hand to finish off the moves. What we have been fed week after week with barely any exception is Corr ( or Weston ) surrounded by several defenders , the ball banged up to him head height , with our supporting players probably 30 yards away. Little wonder we dont look like scoring.
If we want to WIN home matches , we need to ATTACK in greater numbers. We know Div 2 defenders are prone to mistakes, so lets put them under far more pressure and reap the benefit.

This this this this this this and this again,

We never attack at home en masse.

I think you could add in the prolific goalscorer that is Weston. Although the club officially list him as a midfielder, which seems strange, Clean Sheets has always insisted he is a striker! Lets also remember he said he was bringing in O Toole as a midfield goal getter/ striker. Makes Phil and his second to none scouting team look even worse if you include these two calamities into your figures?

Goalscorers at this level are few and far between. Sturrock and Tilson signed their fair share of donkeys too. As others have said, we have a lack of goals throughout the whole team. Leonard, Timlin, Hurst and Atkinson have 3 goals between them this season, that's not good enough.

I agree, but at least Sturrock signed Assombalonga, Corr, Tomlin and Dickinson who were prolific. He might have signed some duds aswell, but all of Brown's strikers have been duds. Brown's managed to make some terrible signings despite having one of (if not the most) expensive back room staff in the league and the use of a 'chief scout' which I don't remember Sturrock ever having access to.

All this talk about goals coming from the whole team. Clifford anyone!? Has a strike on him and bagged two earlier in the season, including the winner at Cheltenham. Think he should be recalled to be honest, in place of Atkinson. Yes Clifford is a red card waiting to happen at times, but, hopefully his desire to get back in the team and hold down a place should calm down his eagerness for a reckless lunge. At this stage (struggling for goals so badly), especially at home, we don't really have a great deal to lose in giving him a game tomorrow...

Yep, stunning return. 46 league shots and 3 league goals for us in total. That's gong to turn our season around.

When I first started reading this I thought it was in Binary Code.

This. We never have anybody in the box when attacking on the wings

Indeed, plus we should be hoping for at least 10 goals from defence.

At least one reason why getting Barrett back would be a good idea, he would chip in a few or at least provide a threat something we seriously lack from set pieces.

Not actually too upset I'm not going tomorrow, just forgot about it and arranged to do something else.

It's very difficult to attack attack attack at home because every club comes to roots hall and invariably put 10 men behind d the ball - this is a compliment to us ! However we ourselves do attack when we play away, therefore for brown is not as negative as people think !

I do not think we are negative. For our 20 odd league goals we have had almost 300 shots. That is the main stat that people need to look at because I can assure you very few of those 300 shots troubled the keeper. Its an appalling situation and purely down to a non-scoring squad.

I could not agree more. Conor Clifford should be given an extended run in the side irrespective whether Deegan plays.

If you went to the odd game might help you keep up. We have played about 5 different tactics now, including with Jack Payne behind two strikers which is what you were clammering for.

Kinda beat me to it JM, was about to post the same.

This is what infuriates me the most. When a team comes to "park the bus" , they may leave 1 up front with another just behind, the rest lie deep. When this happens we still leave 4 at the back and probably 2 or 3 of our midfielders still sit back. Of course we should be wary of a counter attack but we do have the quality to break teams down we just need to press much higher up the pitch, hassle their defence, and get more bodies sprinting into the box causing chaos.
We need to show our intent by coming out full pelt at the whistle + go all out to score early. this negates the oppositions often used tactic of time wasting + frustrating us on our hallowed turf.

Those last 8 games stats at Roots Hall sum it up perfectly. We are clearly far too over cautious at home + if we dont sort it PDQ we dont deserve to go up. again .
