Southend United is delighted to announce the appointment of Chris Powell as Manager.
The former Blues left back has signed a two-and-a-half year deal.
Powell made 290 appearances for the Club during a six-year stint at Roots Hall in his playing career which saw him become an England international.
The 48-year-old would go onto play for Derby County, Charlton Athletic, West Ham United, Watford and Leicester City.
Towards the end of his playing career, Powell served as Chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association for five years from 2005 until his retirement as a player in 2010.
Powell’s career in management began in January 2011 back at The Valley with Charlton. In his first full season in charge in 2011/12 he masterminded the Addicks to the League One title and his achievement with Charlton saw him pick up the LMA League One Manager of the Year award.
The following season Powell led Charlton to a ninth-place finish in what was the Club’s first season back in the Championship since 2008/09.
His next job came at Championship side Huddersfield Town in September 2014 where he steered the Terriers to safety before going onto take the reins at Derby County in September 2016 on a temporary basis.
Powell’s return to Roots Hall as Manager will begin with Saturday’s home game against Scunthorpe United.

Fantastic news!

You've got all Southend fans behind you Chris, here's to a better 2nd half of the season

Good luck Chris - you're gonna need it. But you'll have all the fans behind you - just got to win over all the players now.

Brilliant news, have great memories of watching him play for us, a true gentleman. Good luck and I hope he re-writes his own history as SUFC manager. Sometimes it is good to learn your trade and get experience elsewhere and then come back to your roots and manage a club where he was very popular. Let`s get behind him and the boys and get out of this relegation battle. I think he has been scouting for Spurs, so should have some talent to bring in, even some young loanees from Spurs. Good luck and up the blues.
